Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion Families,
I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun break last week and are ready to come back to school. We have started planning our school budget and our School Site Plan For Student Acheivement for next year already with the School Site Council and Unidos PTO. Recently, the school district has identified a need to cut 5 million dollars next year. Most of the budget cuts are coming from "one- time funding" which was put in place because of the effects of the Covid pandemic and that funding is now coming to an end. These cuts will possibly effect us in different areas such as limiting enrichment options, mental health counseling support, reading and math intervention, and yard duty assistance. However, I am confident that we will be able to continue to offer a high quality, enriching and educational Spanish Immersion experience for all students with all of the support they need to be successful.
Mark your calendars for Parent Teacher conference week which will be Monday, March 18- Friday, March 22nd with Early Dismissal days at 1:25 all week(TK at 12:45). Please make note/remember the earlier pick up time at 1:25 PM for transportation purposes and so your child does not have to wait a long time for pick up. For this round of conferences, not everyone will have a conference. Teachers will only schedule conferences if they want to meet with a parent for a specific reason(s) or the parent requests a conference. If you want a conference please email your teacher(s). We will be sending the 2nd Trimester Progress Reports/Report Cards home with the students on Friday, March 15th.
As you know we started the Rethink Waste Program in our school to educate our students on the importance of sorting the trash generated during snack and lunch time into 3 distinct bins: Compost; Recycling; and Landfill. Parents if you can please reinforce these trash sorting concepts/procedures at home it will make it easier for us here at school. Some students are still struggling to put "soft plastic" (e.g., wrappers for bagels, etc.) in the Landfill and need help. If any approved parent volunteers would like to come and help students with the sorting at Lunch time(particularly Kinder and 1st grades) please email me. Here is a Recycling Guide with photos to help teach the younger students. I am also happy to announce that our students now have the opportunity to get fresh, organic, Clover brand milk in lieu of the milk in cartons. This milk is ordered fresh and is now dispensed in cups from a machine. The students report that the milk tastes sweeter and is fresh and better quality. Rethink Waste estimates that we have gone from 11 bags of trash going into the Landfill reduced down to 4(or 64% less trash going to the Landfill!).

iReady Testing
i-Ready Testing for 1st-5th Graders February 27-March 8th
Our 2nd-5th grade students will take the i-Ready Language Arts test February 27-March 1st, and the 1st-5th grade students will take the i-Ready Math test March 12-15th. Parents, please make sure your child is at school on time and has a good night's sleep and breakfast.
What is i-Ready again?? i-Ready is an online program that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform instruction.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning.
i-Ready Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual strengths and areas for growth. These lessons are interactive and provide strategic supports to keep your child engaged as they learn.
What can I do to help?
To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to:
- Get a good night’s sleep, and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.
- Try their best on each question and try not to rush.
- Try not to worry about questions they do not know—remind them that it is expected they will get only about half of the questions correct.
- Be respectful of other students who take longer to finish.
To support your child’s learning i-Ready at home, you can:
- Discuss your child’s progress on their i-Ready lessons.
- Celebrate your child’s learning and growth.
- Encourage them to use i-Ready at home.
Unidos PTO Family GLOW Dance Was SOOOO Fun!!!
This year's Unidos PTO Family Glow Dance was very successful thanks to the many parent volunteers. There were incredible balloon sculptures and black lighting to make the balloons glow. The decorations were great! There was a glow in the dark Tattoo station that the students enjoyed. There were glow in the dark cake pops--yummy! The glow in the dark party favors that were given out for free(the students LOVED the glow sticks!) were amazing. 4th Grade Parent volunteers helped with donating and selling food to help pay for next year's Outdoor Education Trip. The volunteer DJs: Angelo's dad Adam and his brother Jose (the father of alumnus Santiago) did a great job playing songs the students and families really enjoyed with high energy! MUCHAS GRACIAS to parent volunteers: Carmen, Claudia, Mariana, Erika, and Debbie Coyne. Special SHOUT OUT to Yessica Gallagher or the balloon creations and to our Event Chairperson Kelly Coyne!!! Shout outs to everyone that helped make this a memorable and successful event!

NEW Parentpower Workshop Opportunities Via RCSD ELD Department: Kidpower
As soon as young children can understand, it is important to begin teaching children skills for staying in charge of their behavior while understanding that they need adult supervision to stay safe – and they need ongoing guidance to learn how to act safely.
You will leave this program with skills and strategies to:
Notice problems when they are small, before they reach the explosion point.
Teach children how to recognize and manage the feelings and actions that lead to unsafe behavior. Use practice as a natural consequence of making unsafe choices.
Create a plan for how to prevent and handle outbursts.
Be powerful and respectful when taking charge of an out-of-control child.

Child Nutrition Services: Breakfast and Lunch Menus
A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.

Parents are to complete a self-reporting form when a student tests positive for COVID-19 (link below). Our office staff is happy to assist you in filling out the form if help is needed.
