Greetings JES Community!
February has already been a fun month with the celebration of our 100th day of learning. Our students are also learning about African American authors, leaders, inventors, musicians and more all month long as well as the power of unity in our community.
We have a couple of holidays headed our way as well as mid-year assessments at the end of February. Stay tuned for more information coming soon!
As always, if you have any questions about your child's progress, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher. If we can support your family in any way, do not hesitate to let us know!

Let's have our best week yet! Or goal is 97% everyday! Your child's attendance is the most important factor in their success in school!
As always, if your child is running a fever or having diarrhea or vomiting, he/ she must stay home for 24 hours.
Important Daily Deadlines!
7:30 a.m. The back doors automatically lock, and you will need to drive around and walk your child in to the building. PLEASE DO NOT DROP-OFF STUDENTS AFTER 7:30. They must be signed in by a parent or guardian.
1:30 p.m. ALL transportation changes must be made by 1:30 by emailing or calling Stephanie Garcia at (512)-746-2170 or stephanie.garcia@jarrellisd.org.
2:30 p.m. Any student checking out early for an appointment, must be picked up prior to 2:30.
PRE-K
This week in pre-k, we will be learning that transportation is a way of traveling from one place to another place, people use many types of transportation all around the world, and types of transportation can be categorized into groups: land, air, water.
In math, we will be learning that each pattern has a pattern core that repeats again and again. In literacy, we will be learning, a sentence is a collection of individual words, rhyming words have the same ending sound, each letter of the alphabet has an order of strokes to correctly draw its shape, and thoughts and ideas can be represented using symbols, words, and pictures.
KINDER
1st GRADE
Reading: We will be reviewing our unit in reading about animals and habitats on Monday and Tuesday. Students will be tested over evaluating details to determine what is most important and unit vocabulary on Wednesday and Thursday.
Phonics: We actually needed more time for the phonics testing, so we began the new unit on Friday. As shared last week, we will review the spellings ‘p’ and ‘pp’ for the sound /p/ as in pot and napping. We will also review the spellings ‘b’ and ‘bb’ for the sound /b/ as in bat and rubbing. We will discuss how we have been reading and writing two-syllable words and some of the words had a root word with an ending of -ing and -ed. We will introduce the word suffix and how word endings are also called suffixes. We will review making a noun plural by adding an -s or -es. We will understand that a statement ends with a period and a question ends with a question mark. We will continue to read from our readers and answer questions about key details in the text. We will continue with these spelling words this week: herd, verb, barns, park, horn, porch, short, and said. Students will be tested over these words on Thursday.
Writing: Students will continue to finish their animal informational text. We will be using these informational texts to create and publish a classroom book that will be submitted to a publishing company. Parents will be able to purchase the published books.
Math: We will continue our unit over place value, comparison, and addition and subtraction to 40. Students will be using strategies to solve the addition and subtraction problems up to 40 by looking at the ones and tens, drawing pictures, and using math manipulatives. Students will also use these strategies to solve word problems.
Social Studies; We will be identifying contributions of historical figures. The historical figures we will be learning about are George Wachington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King Jr. and how they have influenced our nation.
2nd GRADE
In Reading (Skills), we will be starting the next unit focusing on adding adjectives, identifying nouns and verbs, and the /u/ sound. In Math, we will be learning about associative property. In Reading (Knowledge), we will be wrapping up our domain on the Civil War by writing about main ideas with key details. In Science, we will learn about moon phases.
3rd GRADE
4th GRADE
In our math unit over fraction equivalence, ordering and operations we will be decomposing and composing fractions greater than 1 to express them in various forms. We will compare fractions using benchmark fractions and creating common numerators or denominators. In science we are finishing up Unit 7 by continuing to learn about the Earth's water cycle and the sun as a major source of energy in the process.
In language arts, we have begun our nonfiction unit about geology. We will be determining main ideas and finding text evidence to support responses about the changing earth. We also will be reviewing all the nonfiction text features throughout our book as we read. In social studies, we continue reading and summarizing the battles of the Texas Revolution.
5th GRADE
Our students have had a lot of fun reading and acting with Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream"! This week they will continue to make inferences about characters and their motivations, as well as read and understand Shakespeare's language and poetic rhythm.
This week in math, students will focus on the division of fractions and whole numbers. They will engage in activities to master this essential skill, ensuring a solid understanding of how to navigate the division of these mathematical elements.
In our science studies this week, students will delve into the intricate world of ecosystems by exploring food webs. They'll investigate the interdependence between living and non-living components, unraveling the fascinating relationships that sustain these natural systems.
Library
This week in the library Prek-1st grade will be learning about Thurgood Marshall and how he helped end segregation.
Second grade will be learning about how George Washington Carver discovered over 300 uses for peanuts as well as being an influential advocate for racial equality.
Third grade will read about Harriet Tubman and create a mini biography of her life.
Fourth & Fifth grade will be choosing a historical figure from black history and will be creating biography posters to hang around the school.

Lunch with an Olympian
Olympic hopeful Captain Riley Tejcek will be at the American Legion in Jarrell on Saturday, February 17 from 1 pm to 4 pm. The Legion is hosting a "Lunch with an Olympian." She has an inspiring story that is beneficial for children to hear.
In addition to her role in the Marine Corps, she is the leading contender to be the pilot on the 2026 Winter Olympics US Women's Bobsled Team. Only 4% of officers in the Marines are women. The Legion is providing free hot dogs, chips, and drinks.
Captain Tejcek will have a Q&A and meet and greet.
