A Message from Principal Gallegos
Greetings, Barrows Families,
This was an exciting week at Barrows, with the highlight being Global Play Day and an early release for snow! On Wednesday, students spent the entire day playing games, crafting, and building. Global Play Day encourages creativity, collaboration, and opportunities to share interests and learn from others. To learn more about this initiative and the importance of play (especially without screens), please check out this website and the informative TedTalk link on the "about" page: https://globalschoolplayday.com/about.
Today was the last day for students to submit their reading logs to their teachers for the READbowl Challenge! Our school totaled reading minutes in just one month. I am excited for our Read Across America Challenge to begin in March!
Highlights:
- Our traditional New England Winter Weather continues through February. Thank you for preparing for a slow/longer drop-off by starting your mornings a little earlier so that each student arrives on time!
- Please remember that our staff begins supervision at 8:15 a.m. when the first bell rings. Students who arrive at the Barrows campus before 8:15 a.m. should have supervision and/or a clear plan of their morning expectations.
- February vacation is from the 17th-21st!
- Mark your calendars for the next METCO event- Roller Skating on March 20th! Details in the METCO section.
- Students in grades 3-5 will take MCAS this spring. Our tentative dates are posted below. Please do not schedule any appointments on your students testing dates. Thank you!
- Student Council is hosting our first Spirit Week of 2025 next week. See what's planned below!
Be well,
Alissa

2025 MCAS Dates for Students in Grades 3, 4 & 5
School Drop Off
First Bell 8:15am I Start of Day Bell 8:25am
Students should be sitting at their desks, ready to learn for the 8:25am bell.
Any student that comes into the school building after 8:25am will be marked as tardy.
Breakfast is available for students in the cafeteria between 8:15am-8:30am.
Why is prompt arrival important?
Arriving at school on time demonstrates a commitment to a student's education, allows students to fully participate in lessons from the beginning, minimizes disruptions to the classroom, and fosters a positive learning environment by showing respect for teachers and peers.
Tips to arriving on time:
Establish a morning routine that is followed regularly
Set multiple alarms, if needed
Place the alarm across the room to make sure you physically get up out of bed before turning it off
Pick out your clothing the night before, this includes shoes and accessories
Pack your backpack and ensure everything is packed the night before
Do not wait until last minute to complete any school assignments
Pack and prepare breakfast, snack and lunch the night prior so it can be a “grab and go”
Try to minimize distractions
Have a consistent bedtime and routine
Establish back-up transportation if needed
Always plan some extra time into the routine incase things come up
Please reach out to us if you have any concerns about getting your student to school on time.

METCO
Reading Public Schools is a METCO District
METCO unites suburban towns with Boston to engage in a reciprocal learning partnership in support of all students. Because of this, every child who attends school in Reading Public Schools is a METCO student and every parent or guardian who has a student in RPS is a part of the METCO community.
"Since its founding during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, the METCO program has enrolled tens of thousands of Boston students of color in predominately white school districts, creating the opportunity for those districts to experience the advantages of learning and working in a racially and ethnically diverse setting."
Reading METCO will be hosting a roller-skating event for our Reading and Boston students and parents at Roller World in Saugus on Thursday March 20th, from 5:00pm-7:00pm. This will be a fun opportunity for students to hangout and mingle after school hours. This allows space for Reading and Boston resident parents to meet and engage with one another. Pizza and drinks will be provided. We will also cover costs for skate rentals.
You must register for this event as it is on a first come first serve basis. Here is the link to register for this event- Roller World Registration Link
Deadline to sign up is Thursday March 6.
Details for Roller World:
Date: Thursday March 20th, 2025
Time: 5:00pm-7:00pm
Where: Roller World, Saugus, MA- 425R Broadway, Saugus, MA, 01906
BOSTON RESIDENT PARENTS/STUDENTS:
If you would like your child to attend this event, you must sign your child up through the link provided in this email. If you are unable to attend/don't sign up your child for this event, the school bus will still be taking your child home at the regular afterschool time of 2:45pm. Additionally, if your child will be attending this event and you're unable to pick your child up by 7:00pm, METCO will be providing transportation back to Boston. However, as their parents/guardians, if you're able to come join the event, we would love that! As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Warmest Regards,
Cindy Marte

Barrows Safety Reminders
Arrival
- Please drive slowly up Edgemont to keep everyone safe; remember, it is a ONE-WAY during the school day.
- Do not park in the indented section by the gym. This is the "kiss & go" area for a quick drop-off.
- Doors open at 8:15 and close at 8:25. Your child needs to be in their seat by 8:25 AM. If your child arrives to school after the doors have closed, they must come to the front door and be marked tardy.
- The Staff Parking Lot is for staff only and off limits to all pedestrians from arrival-dismissal for the safety of all. Please respect this important aspect of our campus.
Dismissal:
- At dismissal time, there is no live pick-up in the driveway except for students who take the bus. Kindergarteners exit the building at 2:40 PM. The rest of the students dismiss at 2:45 PM from the same doors they enter in the morning.
As a safety reminder, the staff parking lot is staff-only. We respectfully ask that caregivers park along the streets. With our students exiting from their external doors in the parking lot, having cars drive in and out is not safe. You need to walk around the school on the blacktop to the back. Thanks for helping us out.
Ready to Play the Best Way
Please do not have your children wear flip-flops. Sneakers are best, but flip-flops are dangerous when running at recess (and Crocs aren't great).
Dogs and Puppies on School Grounds
School Committee policy prohibits dogs on school grounds as much as we all love dogs and puppies and as much fun as it is walking them. If you'd like to walk your dog as part of your pick-up routine, the dog has to stay off school property. If you'd like your child to walk to you on the sidewalk or to the driveway entrances at dismissal so you can wait with your dog, please make that plan with them.

An Important Reminder from Mrs. Atwood
Dear Barrows Families,
This is a friendly reminder that kids should wear sneakers on the days that they have Physical Education. I love Crocs too, but they don’t count as sneakers…even when they’re worn in sport mode! Thanks so much for your support with this safety matter.
