Monthly Newsletter for January 2018
Exploring Forensic and Investigative Sciences in Library on January 30th for 3rd-5th Graders
Our January event will explore the Forensic and Investigative Sciences. Students will test and analyze evidence just like detectives and forensic scientists to solve a mystery.
Space will be limited (up to 25 students), so those who return their applications first will get to attend the first event. Students can attend more than one STEAM Careers event, but again space is limited.
There will be five different events each month until school ends, so there will be multiple opportunities for students to attend. Applications for each month's event will be sent out separately at the beginning of each month to give every student a chance to attend at least one of the events this year.
Check Tuesday folders for applications and return them to the library as soon as you can. Look in next month's PCE Library newsletter for details and more information about our February Makerspace Explorations: STEAM Careers event!

Texas Bluebonnet Awards Voting for Paloma Creek 3rd-5th Graders Begins Now
Paloma Creek Elementary will be participating in the Texas Bluebonnet Awards this month! This opportunity will be open to all 3rd-5th graders that have read at least five of the titles from the Bluebonnet Award Nomination list for 2017-2018. Voting must be completed by January 31st, so students that are eligible can come to the library any day this month to complete a ballot for their favorite nominee book.
Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) is a unique program that encourages reading for pleasure and is aimed at students in grades 3-6. Each year, twenty books are chosen as the “Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List” by the TBA selection committee. If students read a minimum of five books from the current master list (or have the books read aloud to them), they have the opportunity to vote for their favorite title during the month of January each year.
The author of the book receiving the most votes statewide is declared the winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award. More information and the master list can be found at the Texas Library Association's Texas Bluebonnet site: http://www.txla.org/TBA-about
All 3rd-5th received a tracking chart for them to keep track of the books they have read from the master list. If your student has read at least five our the TBA books, then send them to the library to vote sometime this month!
January STEAM Book Design Challenge
STEAM Challenge
Our STEAM Challenge for January is a science experiment about the effects of salt on ice. Check out our Paloma Creek Elementary Library blog for more details about our monthly design challenges for families and other news about our library. Our blog, CREATE@PalomaCreek can be found here or from our PCE Library webpage.
After finishing the challenge, take a picture and post it to our PCE Library social media sites or email it to paloma_library@dentonisd.org.
Students that participate in this optional (but fun) challenge and post/email a picture by January 31st will get to choose a poster or small paperback book as a prize.
