Dearest Lake Forest High School,
Happy Friday and the start of November--I cannot believe it, and though I have enjoyed the unseasonably warm temperatures, there is something about that chill in the air that makes it feel more like fall. On second thought, I probably shouldn't tempt the weather gods too much!
There is much to celebrate at LFHS, so please remember to read to the bottom of the Fanscout for all of the amazing things happening because of our exceptional students. And speaking of amazing--it is that time of year again: Our Annual Good Gobble Thank Yous to our staff. Please take the time and encourage your Scout to take the time to thank our dedicated staff members. You can fill out one thank you, or a hundred thank yous, and we will personally send those to individual staff members right before Thanksgiving Break.
Another reason to celebrate? A continued designation of Exemplary on our school's report card.
While the Illinois Report Card continues to evolve, with new metrics added each year, I am so proud to see, year after year, how the hard work of our students, staff, and community continues to show in our data. It takes a village, and this is a mighty one.
Opportunities for Ongoing Support
First and foremost, as our students have reminded us, they are more than test scores, certifications, participation rates, and daily attendance logs. Data is only as good as the individual stories of those behind it. Our Scouts are students who have persevered through tremendous challenges, and they should be uniquely celebrated and understood. Here are some opportunities families may consider to support your student further:
Attendance matters: Continue to schedule doctor’s appointments, family vacations, and other times when your student would miss school outside of the school day. Even when students miss a study hall, this is an opportunity for our students to attend resource centers or targeted intervention and enrichment opportunities.
The Comprehensive School Climate Inventory (CSCI): This survey assesses our school community’s culture and climate for its students and staff. While LFHS has consistently had exceptional scores in all domains, last year we had record-setting student participation. Please continue to encourage your students to participate in this school-wide survey–it contributes to our score on the state report card, and the data is used in our strategic planning.
ACT support: LFHS is one of the only high schools in the area that offers free support for our students on the ACT (previously SAT). Your 11th-grade student can sign up for weekend ACT boot camps and targeted ACT intervention during study hall periods provided by an external ACT prep company. While the skills of critical reading and math are, of course, taught in our classrooms, and evidenced by our high college admissions rates and low post-secondary remediation percentages, refining test-taking skills and strategies are important for any standardized test, whether it be in high school or beyond.

Stay well and connected this weekend!
