School Information
Your Child’s Attendance Is Vital
The Sioux City Community School District recognizes that good attendance is essential to academic success. Nationwide, far too many students are at risk academically because they are chronically absent. Chronic absence is described as missing 10 percent of the school year—or about 18 days – for any reason, excused or unexcused. Research shows that’s the point at which absenteeism begins to affect student performance. We need your assistance to reduce absenteeism and help your student reach their highest potential. If there are challenges that make it difficult for your student to attend school, please let us know. We want to partner with you to build a habit of regular attendance and help your child succeed.
School Safety
The safety of our students and staff is a top priority. Each year, our school has fire, tornado, and intruder drills to ensure our students and staff are prepared for potential emergencies.
If an emergency should occur, we will notify you through our Blackboard messaging system. The system will call every phone number listed for your child, providing details about the emergency and directions for you on where and when to pick up your child if necessary. For more information on our safety processes, visit our website at https://www.siouxcityschools.org/parents/safety/.
Conference Sign Up
Please remember to sign up for a conference time with your child’s teacher either on October 4 or October 5. You will receive an email with the link to myconferencetime.com/nodlandsunnyside/ from the school registrar when it goes live.
If you have any questions or are having trouble setting up your conference time please call the office at Nodland 274-4044 or Sunnyside 274-4047.
Birthday Treats
We love celebrating students’ birthdays. To help us keep your child’s celebration safe for everyone, treats for birthdays should be store purchased, individually wrapped items. Also, due to Covid-19, parents or guardians are not allowed into our building. Your child’s teacher will assist with distributing birthday treats as needed.
Make sure to call the office and ask if there are any allergies in your child's classroom before choosing a snack to send.

USDA Free Meal Program
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved an extension of the FREE Breakfast and Lunch program for all Sioux City Community School District students. Free meals will be available through the 2021-2022 school year.
Who can access meals?
- All students enrolled in the Sioux City Community School District will be eligible for free meals (breakfast and lunch)
- Students will receive free breakfast and lunch at school.
- Students enrolled in VIBE Academy, the District’s virtual school, can pick up meals according to the meal distribution schedule at any school during the hours of 11 am to 1 pm.
How does this affect your student’s school lunch status?
Students that already receive free meals will experience no change in lunch status. Students that are full pay or reduced lunch status will be Temporarily moved to FREE status. No meal charges will be made to student accounts through the 2021-2022 school year.
When the USDA ends the free meal program, students will return to their original lunch status, and student accounts will be charged accordingly for the next school year.
Ala Carte Items Are Available
Ala carte options will still be available; however, al a carte items are not covered by the USDA funding, and students will be charged separately for al a carte items. Milk is considered al a carte for cold lunches at a cost of $ .50.September Breakfast and Lunch Menus
