On April 13th, our Italian and Spanish language students flexed their culinary muscles in a hands-on cooking class unlike any they have taken at Hoboken's Hudson Table. Each group of 4-5 created homemade Pappardelle, Sugo, and Churros, first sharpening up knife skills at the prep tables before taking it behind the flame to finish their dishes.

Chef Sam walked them through the end-to-end process of creating a refined meal, covering kitchen safety, culinary techniques, and how to present a beautiful meal on the table. Once the cooking was completed, they removed their aprons and enjoyed their hard work around a communal table. Before the trip, students learned cooking-related vocabulary in the classroom, including phrases, vegetables, and utensils.

The Wayne Hills High School Robotics team is proud to have competed in the 19th annual North Jersey Robotics Competition held at Passaic County Community College on May 9th & 11th. Under the supervision of Mr. Robert Yost, Hills Robotics teacher, and his Robotics 2 & 3 classes, students were able to apply their technical knowledge and application of mechanical engineering systems, programming, electronics, and time management to produce a versatile competition robot.

Students followed the Informed Design Process (IDP), a methodical problem-solving engineering model, to plan and develop the robot in eight steps using Google Slides. By following the IDP plan, students were able to clearly document the development of the robot in stages. This document then became the outline for the Science and Technical presentation, which the students delivered to an engineering panel of college judges for a graded element of the competition. The North Jersey Robotics Competition brings high school and middle school teams together from Bergen, Essex, Morris, and Passaic Counties in northern New Jersey. This year’s robot was capable of playing an oversized game of Dominoes whereby flipping downward-facing domino boards over and matching doubles all by radio control and a single operator. A second event, the Tire Change, challenged the robot to remove three lug nuts and remove a plastic tire from a prop to earn points. Our robot utilized a planetary gearset with 3D printed lug nut sockets and magnets, and an elevator lift assembly employed a linear screw that maintained exact heights for aligning up to the three lug nuts. The final event was an Obstacle Course where the entire college gym floor was transformed to test the robot’s agility to make sharp turns, climb hills, and challenge operator driving skills in the shortest amount of time.

Early in January, at the start of the design and sketching phase, Mr. Yost made a challenge of his own to his students of Robotics 2 & 3. “If you win the overall competition, I will gladly allow you to shave my head in class, sparing the mustache.” Mr. Yost has always been a man of his word, and students accepted the challenge. At the end of the competition, the Wayne Hills Robotics team earned the highest award of Overall Champion.

The Wayne Hills Boys Tennis team won the Passaic County Tournament for the 18th consecutive year. Wayne Hills won all three singles positions. Senior Sahil Chatiwala won the first singles position over Passaic Tech 7-5 and 6-0 to win his second consecutive first singles title. Freshman Shayan Chatiwala won the second singles position 6-2 and 6-0 over Wayne Valley. Freshman Aron Martin won the third singles position 6-2 and 6-0 over Passaic Tech. Ishan Sinha and Luke Kornhaber came in second place at first doubles and Allan Shneyderman, and Arya Vosough advanced to the semifinals. The Patriots also clinched the Big North Independence League title going undefeated in the league.

This year's spring writing contest had over 40 submissions. The winners will be showcased in the Emphasis Literary Review, along with more Wayne Valley creative writers and artists. Look out for the digital copy in the second week of June. Here are the winners by category:

Preschool Application for the 2023-2024 School Year is Now Open!

Registration for kindergarten and new first-grade students for the 2023-2024 school year will take place online through each elementary school between February 1 and February 22, 2023. Only a parent or guardian may enroll the child.

Complete the online registration process and schedule an appointment to register your child(ren). Please have all required documentation ready prior to completing the online form, and keep all documents handy as they will need to be verified at your in-person appointment.
