Kia ora Parents and Whānau,
Thanks for your ongoing support of teachers and learners over the last few weeks. Tomorrow we will be back in Alert Level Three with a very small number of learners at school. Thanks for your support in keeping your children home until the end of term.
Next week is National Mental Health Awareness Week. Please encourage our learners to take some time to connect with family and friends. TNIS teachers will be highlighting extra wellbeing and mental health awareness activities in conjunction with a reduced amount of classwork.
This reflection was shared with me last week. I thought you might enjoy reading it.
What If Instead of Being Behind, our Learners are Ahead after our Lockdown Life?
What if instead of falling behind, our learners are advanced?
What if they have more empathy, they enjoy family connections, they can be more creative and entertain themselves, they love to read and express themselves?
What if they enjoy the simple things, like their own backyards and decks, sitting near a window in the quiet?
What if they notice the birds and the dates the different flowers emerge and the calming renewal of a gentle rain shower?
What if our learners are the ones to learn to cook, organise their space, do their laundry and help keep a well run home?
What if they learn to stretch a dollar and live with less?
What if they learn to plan shopping trips and make meals at home?
What if they learn the difference between want and need?
What if they learn the value of eating together as a family and finding the good in sharing the small delights of every day?
What if they are the ones who place great value on their teachers and educational professionals, librarians, public servants and the previously invisible essential workers like truck drivers, grocers, cashiers, healthcare workers... just to name a few who are taking care of us right now while we are sheltered at home?
What if among these learners a great leader emerges who has the benefit of a slower pace and simpler life to truly learn what really matters in life?
What if our learners are ahead?

Ministry of Education message Alert level restrictions: tips for parents from Dr Hinemoa Elder and Nathan Wallis
We have heard that many parents and whānau are feeling anxious about their children’s behaviour and routine changes through alert level changes and extended alert level restrictions.
Thank you for sharing these concerns – in response, we asked Dr Hinemoa Elder (child adolescent psychiatrist) and Nathan Wallis (neuroscience educator) for some tips and advice.
In the video we’ve made, they describe what parents can do if they have concerns.
You can share the video with your school community through your school’s website, Facebook, newsletter or send it via email.
If parents are still concerned their tamariki aren’t coping, it’s important to remind them to reach out and talk with a health professional. There’s lot of support, information and help available.
Weekly Focus
Connection: Connect with Family and Friends
Kotahitanga: Reflecting on and being grateful for what we have.
Assembly Week 9 - The Gratitude Edition
Ako
EPro8 Successes
The top 40% made it to round 2, and two TNIS learners, Blake (Room 13) and Oscar (Room 4) made it this far. T
Round 2 was to build a marble run with points for different parts, both Blake and Oscar's builds were showcased and they have both made it into the Grand Finale. Only 19 teams from across the country have made it through and only 12 from Auckland so we think it is amazing 2 are from TNIS (that we know of).
The boys now both have 2 weeks to create the final piece.
Blake's Bridge was 501cm long!

Guitar Lessons - Dave Gatman
Hi there! I have taught Guitar to kids in schools for over 15 years. I love working with kids and inspiring the next generation of musicians. I like to make my lessons as positive and fun as possible, teaching a range of songs from traditional folk/blues to the current pop and rock tunes.
I've played the guitar in a large variety of settings, and I'm currently in a covers band playing at weddings, bars and parties.
Lessons are in groups of up to 4 at a time, and cost $20.00 plus gst, for half an hour.
Individual lessons are offered if I feel like the student will benefit from them, and if I have space. These cost $35.00 plus GST per half hour.
Lessons are on Wednesday mornings at TNIS as well.
Feel free to contact me - dave.gatman@musiqhub.co.nz. Or text/call on 021 2221456.
Thanks,
Dave
