Rotation and Revoution
The Difference between Rotation and Revolution
Rotation
Rotation can cause day and night, shadows to change, and the appearance of the movement of the sun. Rotation means "to spin". Earth rotates on its axis, which is an imaginary line running through the center of the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole. Earth completes 1 rotation every 24 hours.
Revolution
Revolution causes seasons. The Earth also moves around the Sun in a set path
the called the orbit. The movement of the Earth around the Sun is called revolution. It takes 365 days and 6 hours to complete one revolution. This equals one year. Revolution also runs from east to west.
Revolution: Seasons
This shows revolution with seasons. The tilt of the axis while it revolves makes us have seasons. The part that tilts towards the sun has summer and the part that tilts away from the sun has winter.
Rotation: Day and Night
Rotation causes day and night. The part that is facing the sun has day and the part that faces away from the sun has night. As we turn into the light and away from the light, the sun looks like it is moving but it is really us that are moving.
Rotation: Shadows To Change
Rotation causes shadows to change. Earth's rotation makes the sun rise in the east and set in the west. Because the sun looks like it is moving, the shadows change as the sun changes.
