The NCDOT Summer Accelerator Program began in the summer of 2023 to facilitate and recruit 9th through 12th grade high school students for NCDOT career opportunities.
Mountain Heritage High School in Yancey County was the first to accept the program and has become the model for the state moving forward.
The program's initiative is to have qualified 9th through 12th graders achieve certifications needed to gain employment as soon as graduation.
Dr. Ayanna Wallace at NCDOT is the founder of this pilot program and Jeremy Dotts, carpentry teacher at MHHS, will be facilitating as lead consultant across all 14 divisions in North Carolina.
"Programs like this are how we restore our dwindling workforce within the trades. Students will benefit from ITRE Certifications, career training and hands-on demonstrations. The goal this summer is to run this program in one high school in all 14 divisions across North Carolina." Dotts stated.
