What is the 2024 Black History Month theme? Since its origins in the 1920s, Black History Month has been assigned a theme. For 2024, the theme is "African Americans and the Arts," according to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
Romare Bearden was an artist, author, and songwriter. He worked with many types of media including cartoons, oils, and collages. Bearden was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. Around 1915, his family followed the Great Migration to the North. He grew up in New York City and Pittsburgh, and graduated from New York University in 1935.
From the mid-1930s through the 1960s, Bearden was a social worker with the New York City Department of Social Services, creating his art at night and on weekends. His success as an artist was recognized with his first solo exhibition in Harlem in 1940 and his first solo show in Washington, D.C. in 1944. Bearden’s art was exhibited during his lifetime throughout the United States and Europe. His work depicted his childhood in North Carolina, his life in Harlem, and stories from historical, literary, and musical sources.

History of Groundhog Day
History of Groundhog Day
What does a sleepy, furry marmot have to do with seasonal change? According to fans of Punxsutawney Phil, everything! But why?
The story begins with Candlemas, an early Christian holiday where candles were blessed and distributed. Celebrators of the holiday eventually declared clear skies on Candlemas meant a longer winter.
The Roman legions, during the conquest of the northern country, brought this tradition to the Germanic tribes who concluded that if the sun made an appearance on Candlemas Day a hedgehog would cast a shadow, thus predicting six more weeks of bad weather or "Second Winter." German immigrants brought the tradition to Pennsylvania; but how did Punxsutawney Phil emerge?
In 1886, a spirited group of groundhog hunters from Punxsutawney dubbed themselves "The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club." One member was an editor of Punxsutawney's newspaper. Using his ink, he proclaimed Punxsutawney Phil, the local groundhog, to be the one and only weather prognosticating groundhog. He issued this proclamation on Candlemas, and yes, Groundhog Day. Phil's fame spread, and newspapers from around the globe began to report his Gobbler's Knob prediction.

Change of Transportation
If your child needs to go home a different way than normal please send a note or email their teacher AND the front office at rachelle.bartlett@richlandone.org. Teachers are not always available to check email during the day (they are teaching your children), so its best to email both! If the person picking up in car rider or walker line is not on your pick up list, it has to be in writing by the parent for them to pick up. Last, but certainly not least, PLEASE do not call a change in after 1:45. End of day is already in motion and we want to make sure your child is in the right location to get home safely. Thank you!
