Hello Dorr Families,
October has arrived and just like clockwork the temps are falling. Fall is here!! Please remember to help your student dress for the weather as temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day. It is also helpful to label any coats, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, etc. with your students last name. This makes it much easier for staff to identify and return items to their rightful owners.
There are some fun activities coming up at Dorr Elementary:
The PTO Carnival is tonight on the back playground. Please enter through the gates in the south parking lot.
PTCs are on Oct 7th or 9th. Please sign up with your child’s teacher. We LOVE to see parents at PTC.
Halloween Parade information will be published in the next Dorr Press on October 18th. Classroom specific information will be sent in the coming weeks from each teacher.
Please remember, for the safety of all of our students, any adult who volunteers with Dorr Elementary must have a current, approved ICHAT background check on file. Visit our website: www.waylandunion.org if you need to complete your background check.
Enjoy the weekend!
Best Regards,
Mrs. Seniura
Capturing Kids' Hearts - Character Connection
September Student Of The Month - Empathy
Every month, classes focus on a character trait. Students who show great understanding of, and best represent that character trait are nominated by their teacher for the Student Of The Month! Congratulations to the following students who were awarded Student Of The Month!
Progress Reports - A How To Guide
Progress reports will be available to view in your Parent Portal Oct 4th after 4pm. Follow the easy step by step instructions below to view your students Progress Report!
Distinguished Artist
Dorr Elementary has a Distinguished Artist Program in which student
artwork is on display like an art gallery for the school year. Each year 9
students are chosen as a Distinguished Artist. The distinguished artist is a
student who is responsible in art, shows their creativity and works hard
on all projects. Ms. Corcoran chooses 3 to 4 pieces of artwork in which
the students followed directions and completed the project adding their
creativity. A committee of staff members then votes on the projects to choose the winner.
Congratulations Kaylee Shaffer!
Attendance Questions Explained
Students are expected to be in their seats, ready to learn by 8:50am each day. Students who arrive AFTER 8:50am but BEFORE 9:05am will be marked as AM TARDY. Students who arrive AFTER 9:05am will be marked as 1/2 day AM ABSENT.
Students are expected to complete the school day at 3:50pm. Students who need to be picked up between 3:30pm and 3:49pm will be marked as PM TARDY. Students leaving BEFORE 3:30pm will be marked as 1/2 day PM ABSENT.
If your student is ill, please contact the office to report their absence. It is helpful if you report the students symptoms as it helps us identify break outs of illnesses across classrooms and grades.
Students who are absent will be coded as follows:
Unexcused absence: Students who are absent for illness or other reason, and parent has notified the office will be marked as unexcused absence. The reason for absence will be noted.
Unknown absence: Students who are absent and the office has received no communication from parent/guardian will be marked as unknown absence.
Excused absence: Students who are absent and return with a doctors note that includes the dates/times the student is to be excused, will be marked as excused absence.
Students who obtain 5 & 7 unexcused or unknown absences during the school year will receive a letter from the school bringing the absences to your attention.
Students who obtain 10 unexcused and/or unknown absences during the year will be asked to meet with the principal and may be subject to truancy. Wayland Union Schools district policy outlining attendance can be found in the student handbook.
Y5's-5th Grade Student Handbook
The Student Handbook has been updated for the 2024-2025 school year. Please take a look at our Student Handbook to familiarize yourself with our policies, procedures, and expectations. For your convenience, we have included a link directly to the handbook. This information can also be found on our website, waylandunion.org under student links.
Visitor/Volunteer Policy
Dorr Elementary loves to welcome visitors and volunteers throughout the year. Any person who enters the building to visit or volunteer is required to have an approved background check on file with the office each year. ICHAT request forms can be found on waylandunion.org under parent quick links. Or, simply click the button below! Please note: If you have students across multiple buildings, please only fill out the form ONCE.

Happening In The Halls
"Fall"ing for some great art!
Dorr Elementary is entering fall mode, and that means beautiful fall art is displayed throughout the halls. Our 2nd graders have been making beautiful leaf prints with leaves that have already fallen off the trees. Our 1st graders are learning how to use oil pastels to make owls.
3rd Grade Gets Culture Lesson
Our 3rd graders were recently invited to visit Camp Jijak to learn about the culture, and traditions of the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians. It was a beautiful day and our students really enjoyed their interactive presentations!
Musical Notes
Our 3rd graders have been working on polishing their knowledge of music. Now it is time to start learning the songs that they will present to families at their Spring Performance. Putting on a performance takes lots of preparation and practice. Each class is learning the materials separately during their Music class each week. They only get 1 practice as a whole grade level the morning of the concert. So each class has to make sure that they are learning their parts in perfect harmony!
Make sure to save the date! Our Spring concert will be held on Thursday, March 27th at 7:00pm in the WUHS Fine Arts Center!
The Book Fair Is Coming!
The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to Dorr Elementary! Student will have a chance to preview the sale early in the week and then shop with their class. The Book Fair will also be open during Parent/Teacher Conferences so make sure you stop in!
