Dragon's Tale
Welcome Back to School Edition - 8/23/24
A Message from Dr. A.
Dear Dragon Families,
I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the final days of summer! As we prepare to welcome back our wonderful students, I wanted to share some exciting updates and important information for the start of our new school year.
School Year Kickoff: We are thrilled to open our doors and begin a fantastic new school year on Monday, August 26th! The energy and enthusiasm of our students and staff make this time of year truly special, and we can’t wait to see everyone’s smiling faces as we embark on this journey together.
Fun Run Date Change: We have an important update regarding our Fun Run event. Please mark your calendars for October 11th! This is a highlight of our school year where we come together to celebrate our school community and have a great time in the process. We look forward to seeing all our students in action and having a blast together as we support a fantastic cause.
Staggered Start for Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten: For our youngest learners, we will be implementing a staggered start to ensure a smooth and welcoming transition. Our Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students will begin their school experience with a gradual approach.
Staggered starts on August 26th last names beginning with:
- Last Names A-M - 8:55-11:30 am
- Last Names N-Z - 1:30-4:00 pm
This staggered start will help our new students acclimate to their new surroundings and routines more comfortably. We are committed to providing a supportive and nurturing environment for every child as they begin their educational journey.
We are so excited to welcome back our returning families and to meet those who are joining us for the first time. Here’s to a year filled with growth, learning, and memorable experiences! If you have any questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the school office.
Looking forward to an incredible school year ahead!
Warmest regards,
Marci Augenstein, Principal
Thank you to our PTA!
Popsicles on the Playground
Thank you to all of our amazing parent volunteers who made our Popsicles on the Playground event a wonderful success! It was so awesome to see our kids back at Keith and get energized for learning this school year! Thank you to all who helped make this a special memory for our students.
Food Allergies at Keith
8/23/24
Dear Parents & Guardians:
Please be aware that we have several children at Keith Elementary that have a life-threatening allergy to peanuts and nuts. Some may neither eat, touch nor even inhale the aroma of peanuts without life-threatening consequences. As a result, it is imperative that we all keep this in mind when planning for any food brought into school.
We are asking for your help and cooperation as we work together to keep all of our students safe. Please remember this serious allergy situation when sending any food to school with your child. Parents are encouraged to make alternative choices when sending food to school with their children. All classrooms encourage and allow healthy snacks of fruits and vegetables.
Although Keith Elementary is not a peanut free building, we must keep any products out of the “peanut free” classrooms that could cause a negative reaction. A detailed letter will be sent to families in the peanut free classrooms from your child's teacher prior to the start of school. All students will participate in a discussion about the special prevention needs of a classmate who is peanut/nut allergic. This will be an age appropriate explanation that may need reinforcement at home.
We have designated certain areas and classrooms in the building as “peanut/nut free”.
Allergic students will receive close supervision during lunch and on field trips, and will be eating only in an area where peanuts and nut products are not allowed, using sanitized blue trays in the cafeteria. There is an emergency plan in place for unexpected exposure, but our most effective tool is prevention and education.
We appreciate the support of all families in helping to minimize the possible exposure for these children to peanuts and other nut products. As always, the health, safety, and well-being of each and every child at our school continues to be of the utmost importance to all of us.
Sincerely,
Marci Augenstein, Ph.D.
Keith Elementary Principal

Back to School Registration Packet
Please see the important message below regarding the Back-to-School Family Access Packet for the 23-24 school year, which MUST be completed by August 20 by all families.
Parents/Guardians must complete the Back-to-School Family Access Packet each school year. This packet differs from enrollment and is required for all students, new and returning. The packet should be completed promptly, so your student may start school on August 26.
The district uses Skyward Family Access to complete things such as the emergency card, end-of-day dismissal plan, requests for Apple Pick Up cards, Food Service application, FERPA form, and other crucial annual school forms requiring parent approval. The 2023-24 Back-to-School Family Access Packet is completed online.
Beginning August 1, parents/guardians must log in to Family Access and use their alphanumeric parent account code to complete the Back-to-School Family Access Packet. A parent account username is alphanumeric - SMITHMAD000; a student account username is the student's ID number - 1234567. You will receive your child's classroom placement when those are posted in Skyward, only if the Family Access Packet is complete.
Log in here to begin: Skyward.
A Skyward Family Access parent account is required to complete the Online Back-to-School Packet. Email FamilyAccess@wlcsd.org or call (248) 956-2190 to acquire a new or lost parent account code. Include ALL of the following information in the body of your message.
- Guardian name
- The name of each child in the district and school they attend
- Guardian's email address that is currently on file with the district
- Daytime phone number
Questions and Support
- If you need help with the Back-to-School packet, visit the Skyward Family Access Page.
- If you still have issues, contact familyaccess@wlcsd.org. Include your name, the student's name, and your specific question.
- Skyward Family Access Page
Thank you for your attention to this important beginning of the year action item! I look forward to a great year together!
Parent Volunteers
At Keith Elementary School, we value the help and support of our parent volunteers! Our district requires that all parent volunteers complete a criminal history background/reference check. The form is linked for you below. If you think you may be volunteering in any capacity at Keith, please complete the form as soon as possible and turn it into the main office at Keith. Our amazing secretaries will be able to take it from there. Thank you for your willingness to volunteer at Keith!
Updates from our Dean Transportation Department
*Transportation schedules- Bus information for general education families will be available in Skyward Family Access beginning at 8am Friday August 16th. As we continue to accept new students, routes may change. Parents/Students will want to check Skyward right before the start of school to confirm their transportation information. Special education transportation students will receive a phone call from their bus driver no later than Wednesday August 21st with their bus information. Most of the families will have that information by Monday, August 19th.
*Patience- Buses will likely be late both morning and afternoon for the first several days of school. The transportation hotline (248-956-3090) is updated for all buses that are running 10 or more minutes behind schedule. New routines are a learned process for our students, staff, parents, and community. Ensuring every student is in the right place is critical to our mission and takes extra time during that learning process.
*School of choice/ In-district transfer requests- Students who attend as school of choice or in-district transfer can request a seat on a bus within the schools' boundary using the google form on the transportation website. We will review these requests after September 14th when busing counts have been determined. Parents will be notified via email if a spot is available. Parents will need to have alternative transportation until that time and potentially after if there are no seats available. (School of choice busing for most elementary schools have been denied for several years because the buses are full.)
*Kindergarten/Junior Kindergarten Students- Parents should know that an adult MUST be at the bus for their student at drop off. If a parent would like their K/JK student to get off the bus alone of with a sibling rider, they MUST fill out a drop off permission slip and give to the bus driver. These forms can be received from the bus driver or the WLCSD transportation website. If your school does not put bands/cards, etc on K/JK students, bus drivers may place a red band on the loop of the students' backpack. With a large number of distractions for the bus driver, this red band helps them to easily identify these students so they are never alone.
Staggered Start for Kindergarten on Monday, August 26
The beginning of Kindergarten is a very exciting time in your child’s life and we look forward to a great school year. Your child is in kind, capable hands with our kindergarten teachers and our entire staff.
To help our youngest learners transition into kindergarten, WLCSD will be utilizing a staggered start on the first day of school, Monday, August 26th.
Staggered starts on August 26th last names beginning with:
- Last Names A-M - 8:55-11:30 am
- Last Names N-Z - 1:30-4:00 pm
*Lunch will not be served to Kindergarten students on this first day.
*For those eligible to receive it, transportation WILL be provided to and from school for both AM and PM students.
Welcome to Kindergarten!
If you have questions regarding the staggered start please call the main office at 248-956-3700.
First Day of School - August 26th
We ask that parents and students practice walking to your child's classroom and take any pictures with your child's teacher during our Meet and Greet event on August 22nd. After the Meet and Greet event, we respectfully ask that students walk to their classroom on their own starting on the first day of school.
Our staff and safeties are available to help all students during this time every day. Thank you for your help with this. We respectfully ask that any volunteers and visitors sign in at the main office.
WLN Homecoming Parade Invitation
This year's WLN Homecoming Parade will take place on September 13th, and we're excited to have your students join us for this event.
As in previous years, we ask each elementary school to create a poster or bring a banner or flag displaying their school's name. The students will hold these posters while walking in the parade. Additionally, we will be providing "Future Knight" shirts for all participating students! If your child has been given one in previous years, please have them wear it to the parade so that we can reserve the shirts for students new to your school and our district.
To ensure everything runs smoothly, we request that parents accompany the students during the parade.
The lineup for the parade will begin at 5:00 PM, with the parade officially starting at 5:30 PM. Please have your students arrive by 5:00 PM and direct them to the North side of the school, near the picnic tables. Signs will be placed around the school to guide you, and we will assist in directing each school to their designated spot in the parade.
We look forward to a wonderful parade and appreciate your support and participation!
