DEPARTMENTAL NEWS
Academies
Business Academy
The Business Academy at John F. Kennedy High School kicked off its exciting monthly speaker series in October with Tenisha Campbell of T. Simone Designs. Speaking to an engaged audience of over 50 students, Ms. Campbell shared her inspiring journey as a graphic designer, illustrator, author, and fashion designer. The discussion was both enlightening and empowering, with students diving into thoughtful questions about overcoming challenges, fostering self-belief, and staying motivated in the world of entrepreneurship.
In November, the Business Academy welcomed Mrs. Ronnette Meyers, founder of JLAN Solutions, as our guest speaker. Mrs. Meyers captivated students with her remarkable entrepreneurial journey—from her role as a federal employee and senior executive at a multi-million-dollar, award-winning government contractor to creating JLAN Solutions, a premier IT and management consulting powerhouse. Sharing hard-earned lessons and invaluable insights, she inspired students with practical advice on building business acumen and charting a path to success.
Broadcast Journalism
On November 21st the Broadcast Journalism and Communications Academy won an Emmy from The National Academy of Television Arts and Science for their story on Woodlawn Historical Park and The Underground Railroad. John F. Kennedy High School is the only school in MCPS to win this award for the school year 2023-2024 and the only school in the state of Maryland. Congratulations to Esther Dzinedza, Sage Martinez, and former Kennedy student, now alumni, class of 2024 Nataly Navarrete who all worked as a team on the story under the supervision of Mrs. Wischmann, the Broadcast Journalism and Communications Academy Lead Teacher.
On December 5th the Broadcast Journalism and Communications Academy came in Third Place in the Student Television Network Challange. The category won was in News Story based on the prompt, How do we retain teachers, and why is it important?
Congratulations to Esther Dzinedza and Chiara Eduardo for their excellent work on the story as well as thank you to all the teachers who they were able to film and interview under the supervision of Mrs. Wischmann, the Broadcast Journalism and Communications Academy Lead Teacher.
If you would like to view the amazing story, please tune in to our YouTube channel on December 11, 2024, for the next episode of The Sword, our award-winning news magazine.

Art
National Art Honor Society
On Wednesday, the National Art honor society welcomed Guest artist Justin Valenti to our Kennedy Art rooms. Mr. Valenti is a 28-year-old artist on the autism spectrum who loves fluid painting and creates art at home and at a local art studio. he joined some of our students to lead a workshop in the practice of pour painting. Students were able to mix colors and experiment with a variety of pouring techniques to create some beautiful organic creations. Be sure to stop by the NAHS Holiday Market this week during lunch to purchase a one-of-a-kind painting!
Wheaton Mall Christmas Tree
Students from Kennedy High School brought holiday cheer to Wheaton Mall by decorating two stunning Christmas trees in celebration of the school's 60th anniversary. The theme, "Celebrating 60 Years," came to life with green and gold ornaments representing the school’s pride and tradition. These decorations symbolized the rich history and unity of Kennedy High School as it marked this milestone year.
The two trees were connected by shimmering lights and sparkling ribbons, symbolizing the bond between the students of Kennedy High School and their community. At the bottom of the trees, you will see 4 deer symbolizing the parents and caregivers that support our students throughout their high school career. This thoughtful design was a reflection of the school’s values and its commitment to fostering strong relationships.

MYP - Middle Years Programme
Students participating in the Think Big Program as part of their MYP/IB Personal Project attended their second field trip this week at Strathmore, alongside Seneca Valley High School. The students had the privilege of hearing from two professional artists about turning ideas into reality. Be Steadwell, a singer-songwriter and filmmaker, shared her journey of writing and producing a musical. Using vocals, a recording loop, and even some audience participation, she brought her art to life. Becky Hill, a percussive dancer, choreographer, and square dance caller, gave the group a hands-on experience by leading a square dance for everyone in attendance. Students worked collaboratively in teams, drawing connections between their own projects, the insights shared by the guest speakers, and the IB Approaches to Learning skills.
A big thank you to Ms. Campo-Abdoun, Mr. Hensley, Mr. MacDonald, Ms. Nickel, Ms. Prati, Ms. Summerlin, and Mr. Wheeler for their support.
We look forward to our third experience, which will take place at Glenstone in January!
