Message From Mrs. Merivirta
Our Fun Run Fundraiser are well underway! Thank you to all of the families that are participating and supporting our school. Donations will be accepted until our Fun Run occurs on Friday, October 11. Please reach out to family members and aquaintances near and far ~ every little bit helps!
This week our students attended an assembly by Basketball Jones who spread the message of kindness, being respectful and having a growth mindset. The assembly was funded using some of our Title 1 funds. The assembly was engaging and sent a positive message for all of our students. See pictures below.
Please know that we are continuing to work with the high school athletics as well as the high school to address parking issues and concerns. . I am continuously reaching out to the district, making them aware of parent concerns and complaints as I receive them. Please know that although you may not see visible changes, I am addressing your concerns to those who have the ability to make meaningful changes. We have purchased Wiley car tags that will attach on your rear view mirror. We will provide one for every family. If you would like any additional tags (second car, grandparent who picks up) you will be able to purchase them for $5 each.
Also, if there is any parent that comes early and would like to monitor the entrance to our lot on game days (2:30 PM -3:45 PM) please contact me. We would be able to utilize our tags for entry into our lot.
I continue to ask parents to follow the expectations for remaining in cars if you are using the drop off or pick up lane. Please be courteous as drivers move into the drive through lane. Most importantly, please DO NOT use the bus loop lanes; for the safety of our students we request that you only use the parking lot.
As always, we thank you for your partnership in ensuring that every every child succeeds! If you ever have a question or a concern, please contact me
Sincerely,
Mrs. Merivirta
Resources from Mrs. LaLone (Title 1)
We started off the week with an amazing visit from Mr. Jim "Basketball" Jones, funded by Title 1. He taught us about respect, social awareness, and "failing forward," all while doing incredible basketball tricks, hosting a dance contest, and leading the biggest Simon Says competition!
Wiley Happenings
The Third Graders scrubbed in for Place Value Surgery. They recently completed a unit in math and used their knowledge and skills to complete tasks that included place value x-rays, expanded form surgery, pharmacy sorts, and diagnosed patient numbers with a symptom check. It is safe to say surgery was successful and Wiley students are top notch math surgeons!
MISD Fourth and Fifth Grade
Daughters/Mothers Maturation Program
The Macomb Intermediate School District will be presenting additional maturation programs for fourth grade and fifth grade girls and their mothers/guardians, at which time they will answer growth and development questions.
National Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month
Listen to the story of two cousins who write back and forth, learning about how their lives are the same and different.
WILEY COYOTE VOLUNTEER PARENT GROUP
Please take a moment to review the upcoming events sponsored by our Parent Volunteer Group. The group meets on a monthly basis and encourages participation by all! We hope that you can volunteer to support some of the planned events and share your ideas as well. The next meeting will be held on October 8th, at 7:00 PM in the Media Center. We hope to see you there!
Safety remains a priority for our schools. Wiley Elementary will once again be providing training to our students on our safety protocols. The protocols identify actions that students may be asked to take in the event of a potential incident: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter.
The training is provided through a short, animated video. In the video, the teacher – Mrs. Appleton – and her students walk through the different responses in a very relaxed and engaging way for younger children. The script was written by our staff.
The protocols will continue to be part of the training while practicing our regular school safety drills, such as fire drills, security drills, tornado drills, evacuation procedures, etc.
The video is available for you to review at this link: UCS School Safety: Standard Response Protocol - Elementary - YouTube If you have any questions, please contact our office.
LUNCH DELIVERY REMINDERS
While we understand the appeal of having fast food delivered to school, we prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of our entire student body. Allowing outside food deliveries creates logistical challenges, disrupts the school environment, and can lead to unfair advantages for some students. For these reasons, fast food deliveries during school hours will not be permitted. We encourage all students to either bring a packed lunch or enjoy the free meals provided in our cafeteria.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
SECURITY PROCEDURES
We are asking for your assistance to ensure that our security procedures during the school day are effective and efficient. When you wish to visit Wiley Elementary, come to front door marked OFFICE. At this door we have a security camera, intercom, and buzzer. To help us assist you when you would like to enter our school:
- Please press the buzzer to speak with someone in the office
- You will be asked to state your name and reason for visiting
- You will be asked to show your photo id into the security camera
- Office staff will buzz the door for you to enter the building
- Please pass through the lobby and enter the office
- Office staff will help you with your request
In addition, we are asking you to not let any visitors in the door as you enter (as they come up behind you) or as you exit the building.
The teachers and staff are committed to student safety and security, and we would like to thank you for your assistance in helping keep the students of Wiley safe.
CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS
The teachers and staff at Wiley support and encourage the recognition of a child’s birthday during the school day. It is an annual milestone in every child’s life that should be celebrated not just at home, but in school as well, where children spend one-third of their day with teachers, classmates, and peers. While there are many wonderful and creative ways to celebrate a child’s birthday in school, birthday celebrations at Wiley will not include food treats. Instead, the focus at Wiley will be recognizing the day in a variety of special ways that do not include food treats. Some possibilities include:
· Class sings “Happy Birthday”
· Happy Birthday Recess/Gift
· Morning “Happy Birthday” PA announcement
· Parent makes a donation of book to class library or a classroom game
· Student reads favorite book to class
· Parent/special someone reads story to class
Your child’s teacher will have more information on how birthdays will be celebrated in the classroom. As educators, caregivers and loved ones we all want the best for our students. Thank you for joining us in giving students healthy opportunities to celebrate important events and achievements.
We LOVE our Volunteers!
Any prospective volunteer of Utica Community Schools including those who will be supervising students, working with students, chaperoning field trip, etc. must complete a Criminal History Check Form and be cleared prior to any volunteer services.
Volunteer background checks must be completed annually. If a parent has students in more than one school, only one volunteer form must be completed.
Click on the link below the photos, complete the form and return to Wiley Office.
