Gifted learners may struggle with friendships because their interests can be highly specific or uncommon, making it harder to find peers who share them. It’s important to recognize when to step in and help children develop social skills, especially if the child is experiencing repeated frustration or loneliness. Some students connect better with people who are older, younger, or differently abled, as they may find it difficult to bond with age-mates — broadening our view of what friendship looks like can help. Introverted children may be perfectly content with just one or two close friends, and that’s okay — quality over quantity in friendships is what matters most.
