ZESD 6 Partners with Shop with a Cop: Building Bonds and Spreading Holiday Cheer
Ho Ho Ho...Down the Aisles We Go!
On Saturday, December 7, select Elmwood and West Elementary school students joined Zion police officers and fire department staff at Walmart for the annual Shop with a Cop event. While students searched the aisles for unique holiday gifts for their families, parents gathered to enjoy coffee, donuts, and live music from a local artist.
Celebrating Nine Years of Impact: The Zion Youth Change Makers
The Zion "Youth Change Makers" celebrated their ninth anniversary, honoring the group of young leaders who began an initiative while attending Zion Central Middle School.
What started with ten middle school students organizing Thanksgiving baskets for eight families has become a thriving community effort. Under the guidance of dedicated teachers—Leatrice Williams, Tara Thomas, Beverly Stackhouse, and Mrs. Davis—the students tirelessly reached out to local businesses, churches, and city offices for support. Their efforts secured donations from stores like Jewel-Osco and Target, enabling them to provide food essentials for families in need.
This year, the Youth Change Makers distributed 40 Thanksgiving baskets—five times more than in their inaugural year—demonstrating the initiative's remarkable growth and sustained impact.
Many of the original members, now pursuing advanced degrees in college, return annually to support the mission they began nearly a decade ago. In doing so, they continue to inspire the next generation of Zion youth, including Cameron, a sixth-grader who joined this year's efforts. The "Youth Change Makers" also honored their original mentors (Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Stackhouse, and Mrs. Davis) with Achievement Awards, recognizing their support in shaping their success. The enduring tradition highlights the students' continued commitment to their community and reinforces the power of mentorship and collective action to create lasting change.
