A Note from Mrs. Kopperud and Ms. Abreo
Dear Adventure Families,
Happy Labor Day weekend! Even though we've only been in school for three weeks, we can tell that students, especially the preschoolers and kindergarteners, need a break. The first few weeks of school are hard for everyone! I hope you enjoy the extra time with your families this weekend.
A few items to note--first, we've decided to push the Fun Run until October 4 to give us just a bit more time to plan and prepare. Secondly, we will have our first Spirit Dress Day next Friday, September 6. To kick off Hispanic Heritage month, students are invited to dress in the traditional clothing from Latin American cultures.
Saludos,

Color Fun Run Fundraiser--October 4, SAVE THE DATE!
This year, we will hold our annual school fundraiser on October 4. We had such great success last year with the Fun Run that it is BACK and EARLIER in the year. Our goal is to raise $10,000; all funds raised go to support extended learning opportunities (field trips, guest speakers) and student celebrations. Last year we raised over $12,000 and by moving the date to the fall we hope to have better weather and also provide teachers with more time to plan for the extended learning opportunities. Our school only has one fundraiser each year, so it's really important that it be successful so we can fund these special opportunities for our kids.
We are soliciting prize donations to motivate the students. If you or someone you know has a business or the desire to donate to this event, please reach out or send the donation to the office. We are hoping to get some small gift cards (Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Domino's, Starbucks, etc.). As the event gets closer we will also share an event volunteer sign-up.
On October 4, every student will participate in running laps during their scheduled grade-level slot during the school day. Students will be invited to wear their grade's color clothing. Then, each student who raises $25 or more will participate in a "victory lap" celebration the following week. During this victory lap, we will shower the students with colored chalk, resulting in a neat design on their t-shirt! The fundraising window will open on September 19. More details coming soon, stay tuned!
Arrival & Dismissal Reminders
- Obey all traffic laws! This includes NO DOUBLE-PARKING on Dakin Street.
- We are not able to accommodate early dismissals between 2:50 and 3:10 due to student transitions and packing up at the end of the day.
- The earliest time students may arrive to school is 7:50 am. There is not any supervision before that time, so please avoid dropping your students off earlier than 7:50. If we notice a pattern of dropping off early, we will need to call you.
- There are three bells in the morning: the 7:50 bell is when doors open and students can enter, the 8:03 bell is to warn that breakfast is concluding, and the 8:05 bell indicates the class is beginning.
- In the morning and afternoon, PLEASE PULL ALL THE WAY UP TO THE ORANGE CONE. This helps the line move quickly and allows as many cars to get off Conifer Road as possible. Yes, it does mean passing the door and it really does make for the smoothest traffic flow. Other families have expressed frustration that some cards are not pulling all the way up.
- Students must enter through the Learning Garden to the cafeteria in the morning. The main entrance is NOT for student arrival between 7:50 and 8:05.
Attendance Awareness!
Extracurriculars! Clubs! Tutoring!
Running Club for students in grades 4, 5, and 6 got off to a great start this week! As a reminder, this club meets after school on Tuesdays until 3:50pm. Please make sure you have turned in your permission slip prior to attending. Contact Mrs. Nonies with any questions.
Our goal is to begin additional extracurricular programming, funded by the 21st CCLC Grant by late September / early October.
Get involved! Volunteer with PIE!
To kick off Hispanic Heritage month, PIE is organizing a traditional dress day for next Friday, September 6. We're asking students who wish to participate to wear the traditional clothing from their Latin American heritage to school so we can learn about the various cultures. Stay tuned for more Hispanic Heritage fun through October 15!
What is my child learning at school?
School Safety
Schools use several different safety protocols nowadays depending on the circumstance. I understand that school safety can be a difficult and scary topic. Adventure staff take our responsibility around school safety very seriously. Staff are trained each year on how to respond and we hold scheduled drills to practice. We typically do not alert families each and every time we hold a drill; we do notify families when there is an unplanned safety protocol used. This is so you can follow up with your child, if desired. If you ever have questions or concerns about school safety, please reach out. It takes each and every one of us to actively maintain safety at our school.
- HOLD: this protocol is used often times during a medical emergency that requires privacy for an individual during a crisis. It includes clearing the hallways and closing classroom doors, but maintaining business as usual.
- SECURE: this protocol is used when there is an evolving incident in the community. It is usually initiated by either Adams County Sheriff’s Department or Mapleton’s Director of Safety and Security. During a “secure” event, we bring all students inside the building and don’t allow anyone to enter or exit the school until we receive notification that the event has been resolved. Inside the building, students and teachers continue with business as usual.
- LOCKDOWN: this protocol is used when there is a danger inside our building. Doors are locked, lights are turned off, and everyone hides and maintains silence. Adams County Sheriff's Department and Mapleton's Director of Safety and Security respond.
- EVACUATE: this protocol is used in the event of a fire. Everyone leaves the building and stays at a specified location until it is decided to be safe to return indoors.
- SHELTER: this protocol is used usually for severe weather and tornadoes. Everyone goes to a designated safe space in our building until the event concludes.
Dual Language Corner
2nd grade is a pivotal year for students in our Dual Language program because it is the first year that they are receiving explicit reading and writing instruction in both English and Spanish. Students practice Spanish phonics and English phonics every single day. In this lesson, students are practicing open syllables and how the end of a verb in Spanish indicates who is doing the action.
