An e-newsletter from Island Lake Elementary School

A message from the principal
Greetings Island Lake Families,
I’m pleased to share that we have just wrapped up our second week of school, and what a successful week this was! We continued building our learning communities, spent time in community at Snail Lake Park after school on Tuesday, began the process of collecting screening data in literacy with select students, and capped off the week with a practice assembly, where we reviewed our C.A.R.E.S. in that shared space. I can feel the inclusive culture of our school growing by the day!
In an effort to increase communication between our school and families, I would like to invite you to a Caregiver Conversation with me next Wednesday, September 18, in Google Meet. The topic for our first meeting is “Principal Q&A”. Please bring a question or two for our group to discuss, as this is a conversation and not a presentation. Thanks in advance to those who are able to join: meet.google.com/gxm-sovu-rcz.
On a personal note, my daughters and I are trying to settle back into our school week routines, which include the usual items: cooking meals that at least one of them refuses to eat (even though they ate it the last time I made it), shuttling them to play practices, and hosting homework sessions where their math work looks so different than the math I remember completing as a student. These busy weeks really do pull at the fabric of our family connectedness. I’m eyeballing the MEA break for a trip up to our cabin in Crosslake, a place for us to push aside work/school and focus on our family.
Have an amazing weekend!
Bill

Choir is now open for all 4th & 5th students!
All 4th & 5th graders are invited to participate in the Island Lake choir. Mrs. Stromback, Island Lake music teacher, welcomes all interested students without an audition or prior choral experience to join. Instruction focuses on proper vocal technique and learning to sing harmony. Students will have the opportunity to learn about many different styles of music and performance techniques. There will be opportunities to perform with the choir later in the year.
Choir is FREE of charge and will meet on Monday mornings from 8:05-9:05 a.m. Choir will start on Monday, September 30, and will rehearse in the music room (Room 148). Depending on enrollment numbers, an additional class might be added that won’t conflict with band or orchestra.
To join choir, please register below. Questions? Please contact Mrs. Stromback at amanda.stromback@mvpschools.org.
Thank You, PTA!
With your generous donation to the library, we were able to update our outdated collection of country books.
We Appreciate Your Support,

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Beginning of the year information
The Elementary Handbook is available!
View the 2024-25 Elementary Handbook here.
The handbook includes information on lunch and recess, vacations, health services, attendance and more. Below are two commonly asked items.
- Birthday Treats: In order to provide a safe environment for our students with food sensitivities, all elementary schools have the following guideline for birthday celebrations: If you wish to bring something to share with classmates for a birthday celebration, please limit it to a non-food acknowledgement . Please do not send latex balloons. Donation examples include, but are not limited to, the following: student’s favorite book to the class collection, stickers, pencils, pens, markers, erasers, a board game to the class for indoor recess days, etc
- Cell Phones/Smart Watches/Cellular Devices: It is the school’s expectation that cell phones remain in the student’s backpack throughout the day, including while on the bus. If your student brings a device and it becomes a distraction to his/her learning or the learning of others, or if it impacts the security of students, a parent/guardian will be notified and the device may be held in the main office until the end of the day. Devices should not be used as a method of communication during the school day. Necessary communication between home and school, and a student and family, should be directed to the front office or the classroom teacher. As with anything of value, the school is not liable for theft or damage.
