Message From Mrs. Merivirta
If you have not already done so, please be sure to sign up for Fall Conferences. You should have received a SMORE explaining how to register if you are a new family, as well as reminding returning parents how to sign up. Conferences are an important part of your child's education. Having the opportunity to meet with your child(ren)'s teacher(s) allows you to learn about successes, areas of concern, and how you can help at home.
When you come to conferences, your child's teacher will share the HOME-SCHOOL COMPACT. This document is a contract between students, parents and teaching staff, outlining the responsibilities of each party to help ensure the success of all students . Every family needs to sign and return the compact to school.
Additionally, if your child is grades K-3 and fall below the 30th percentile on their Fall NWEA Assessment in reading, they will be provided with an IRP (individualized Reading Plan). Your child's teacher will explain how they will provide additional support in school to close their reading gap a well as provide strategies that you can utilize at home to support their learning.
Thank you to all of the families that participated in the Trunk or Treat event this past Saturday. The children had a great time! See pictures below. 🙂
Just a reminder that we will be hosting a Family Math Night this coming Thursday, October 24th from 6:30-7:30 PM. We hope that you will join us! Parents and students are invited to come and play math games as well as learning the importance of Math Fluency and how parents can help at home.
We will be celebrating Halloween with a Halloween Spirit Week the week of October 28th. See flyer below for details.
As always, we thank you for your partnership in ensuring that every every child succeeds! If you ever have a question or a concern, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Merivirta
Parking Lot Etiquette Reminder
(SUPER IMPORTANT)
Dear Wiley Families,
I understand that life seems to be go, go, go and that we all have busy schedules that we are trying to keep. However, when it comes to our parking lot and school safety, I ask that you try to be especially mindful of observing the parking lot expectations and being courteous to other Wiley families.
Additionally, I know that it can be frustrating when we see someone not following the expectations and so sometimes we justify doing the same because they did. Please remember, you are the most important teachers your child will ever have. They look to you for modeling appropriate behaviors and good choices. Our parking lot offers the opportunity to share with your child the poor choice others might be making but noting that you will follow the rules to help our school community and ensure the safety of all.
Please continue to follow these expectations:
- You may NOT exit your car if you choose the pick up lane; students must enter/will be helped into your car from the passenger side).
- You must park if you want to get out of the car.
- No students may enter a car from the driver side.
- Please only park in designated spaces; DO NOT park in the spaces with diagonal lines painted through them.
- Once you are in the lot, you may ONLY TURN LEFT.
- Do not block the drive through lane at any point; pull into this lane once you have picked up your child and proceed to the exit.
I understand that parking is limited; if you can not find a space, please circle back around (utilizing the drive through lane to go back around) until you find one. The spots actually empty quite quickly.
As always, please drive slowly, carefully and patiently ~ take the time in the car to inquire about your child's day. Help model the Wiley Way ~ respectful, responsible and safe!
Thank you for your help.
You Can Support Our Students With a Simple Text or Email!
Please Help Build Our Stem Equipment
Each year Mrs. Bowyer, our Media Center writes a grant to help fund new stem equipment for our students. She has been successful the past few years and is hoping to do the same again this year.
Here is a direct link to our project and voting:
Full STEAM ahead! (classroomcash.org)
- The voting period is October 16-26
- You can vote 5x a day!
- Register to vote and write down the code emailed to you (computer should save it too)
- You can register more than one email if you like and through text!
With last year's grant Mrs. Bowyer purchased Ozobots for our classroom. Ozobot color coding magnets are an interactive way to teach coding principles to our students! These magnets will introduce the fundamentals of coding to our youngest learners as they challenge themselves with puzzles and work together to develop their problem -solving skills. In addition, we hope to purchase STEM Explorers Pixel Kits. Students will be having fun while working on their critical thinking skills!
ACCENTUATING THE POSITIVE
Once again we will be accentuating the positive, recognizing students who demonstrate positive behaviors. Students are given positive office referrals when they exhibit great behaviors such as demonstrating self-control, hard work, a positive attitude, responsibility, teamwork and honesty.
Teachers write the referral and then students are called to the office to meet with me and share their success! Their picture is taken, the referral is sent home to share with their family and their picture is then placed in the Wiley Way. Take a look at our 1st recipient. Great job Wiley Coyotes!

Wiley Happenings
MISD Fourth and Fifth Grade
Daughters/Mothers Maturation Program
The Macomb Intermediate School District will be presenting additional maturation programs for fourth grade and fifth grade girls and their mothers/guardians, at which time they will answer growth and development questions.
WILEY COYOTE VOLUNTEER PARENT GROUP
Please take a moment to review the upcoming events sponsored by our Parent Volunteer Group. The group meets on a monthly basis and encourages participation by all! We hope that you can volunteer to support some of the planned events and share your ideas as well. The next meeting will be held on November 19, at 7:00 PM in the Media Center. We hope to see you there!
Safety remains a priority for our schools. Wiley Elementary will once again be providing training to our students on our safety protocols. The protocols identify actions that students may be asked to take in the event of a potential incident: hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate and shelter.
The training is provided through a short, animated video. In the video, the teacher – Mrs. Appleton – and her students walk through the different responses in a very relaxed and engaging way for younger children. The script was written by our staff.
The protocols will continue to be part of the training while practicing our regular school safety drills, such as fire drills, security drills, tornado drills, evacuation procedures, etc.
The video is available for you to review at this link: UCS School Safety: Standard Response Protocol - Elementary - YouTube If you have any questions, please contact our office.
LUNCH DELIVERY REMINDERS
While we understand the appeal of having fast food delivered to school, we prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of our entire student body. Allowing outside food deliveries creates logistical challenges, disrupts the school environment, and can lead to unfair advantages for some students. For these reasons, fast food deliveries during school hours will not be permitted. We encourage all students to either bring a packed lunch or enjoy the free meals provided in our cafeteria.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
SECURITY PROCEDURES
We are asking for your assistance to ensure that our security procedures during the school day are effective and efficient. When you wish to visit Wiley Elementary, come to front door marked OFFICE. At this door we have a security camera, intercom, and buzzer. To help us assist you when you would like to enter our school:
- Please press the buzzer to speak with someone in the office
- You will be asked to state your name and reason for visiting
- You will be asked to show your photo id into the security camera
- Office staff will buzz the door for you to enter the building
- Please pass through the lobby and enter the office
- Office staff will help you with your request
In addition, we are asking you to not let any visitors in the door as you enter (as they come up behind you) or as you exit the building.
The teachers and staff are committed to student safety and security, and we would like to thank you for your assistance in helping keep the students of Wiley safe.
CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS
The teachers and staff at Wiley support and encourage the recognition of a child’s birthday during the school day. It is an annual milestone in every child’s life that should be celebrated not just at home, but in school as well, where children spend one-third of their day with teachers, classmates, and peers. While there are many wonderful and creative ways to celebrate a child’s birthday in school, birthday celebrations at Wiley will not include food treats. Instead, the focus at Wiley will be recognizing the day in a variety of special ways that do not include food treats. Some possibilities include:
· Class sings “Happy Birthday”
· Happy Birthday Recess/Gift
· Morning “Happy Birthday” PA announcement
· Parent makes a donation of book to class library or a classroom game
· Student reads favorite book to class
· Parent/special someone reads story to class
Your child’s teacher will have more information on how birthdays will be celebrated in the classroom. As educators, caregivers and loved ones we all want the best for our students. Thank you for joining us in giving students healthy opportunities to celebrate important events and achievements.
We LOVE our Volunteers!
Any prospective volunteer of Utica Community Schools including those who will be supervising students, working with students, chaperoning field trip, etc. must complete a Criminal History Check Form and be cleared prior to any volunteer services.
Volunteer background checks must be completed annually. If a parent has students in more than one school, only one volunteer form must be completed.
Click on the link below the photos, complete the form and return to Wiley Office.
