TRAVELERS 2ND GRADE STEAM TIME IN THE MAKERSPACE
The Travelers second graders had an inspiring real-life story (Dream Something Big) read to them prior their creative work at various tables around the makerspace. The purpose of the lesson was to have students design and color a tall building cut from a single sheet of water-coloring paper. To give them ideas, the picture book story students had read to them was about a man who built huge and amazing art-work towers from trash and recycleables. The instuctor, Ms. Rankin, also supplied children with picture books showing many kinds of buildings. She then sent them to tables to cut and tape their buildings together and then use sharpies to draw in windows, doors and decorations. Sample building shapes were also posted on the magnet board in the classroom to offer possibilities.

Artificial intelligence is an important field in computer science. Try out this quick Google artificial intelligence training application to get an idea of how computers are trained to identify drawings. This game can be played as a whole class (with one person trying the drawings at a time on the smartboard, or individuals can play on their chromebooks too!)
You can learn more about how this artificial intelligence works here.
