Keeping Up with Comm Arts
~ October 7, 2024 ~
Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!
The PSAT is this Wednesday, October 9th. All students taking the PSAT need to bring their NISD Chromebooks fully charged. Please make sure to pack your chargers, too. Students participating in the PSAT, take a few minutes to read the email Ms. Lewis sent out Friday with details. The email will walk you through the steps to update your Chromebook and complete the Digital Readiness Check. Juniors, you will not be able to participate in off campus lunch on Wednesday. If you have questions, see Ms. Lewis.
Jostens will be on campus Friday, October 11th so juniors can order their class rings in person. Class ring information was provided during the junior assembly this morning.
Grades for our first report card will be uploaded this Friday, October 11th. Report cards will be available on HAC by Tuesday, October 15th. Juniors and seniors must pass all classes on their report card to remain eligible to go off campus for lunch. Students will need to pick up a new off-campus lunch sticker each marking period. Stickers for the new marking period will go into effect on October 16th.
Next Monday, October 14th, is Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. This is a student holiday/staff work day.
The last day for students to sign up and pay for AP exams is November 1st. Any exam unpaid by November 2nd will be cancelled. See the AP Exams section of the newsletter for more details.

National Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15, 2024 - October 15, 2024
Hispanic Heritage Month is when we recognize and celebrate the historical and cultural contributions that have shaped our nation and communities. Communications Arts HS continues recognizing and celebrating all our National Hispanic Recognition students over announcements.
Our CAHS students celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month in several ways. Some of our students are making short videos about “What Does Hispanic Heritage Month Mean to Me?” as they invite different students and faculty/staff to participate in this project. Our magnet school has Animation as a strand, and they have different inspirational Hispanic/Latinx animation role models such as Charise Castro Smith, the first Latina to co-direct a film, Disney’s “Encanto.” Read more about it: First Latina Animator to co-direct Disney's Encanto

Decision of Respect Day
October 4, 2024
The Decision of Respect Day is a day NISD declares we take a moment across the district campuses to talk about the high stakes that come with cyberbullying and bullying in general. On this day, at Communications Arts HS, willing participants sign a decision of respect certificate that pledges students, faculty/staff to commit to spreading kindness and respect all around, making our school a positive and safe place to engage in learning and social interactions.
Dr. Lisa Baker, Communications Arts HS Principal, engaged in signing the campus Decision of Respect certificate in front of CAHS/Taft HS students on Friday morning in the Cafeteria to advocate for a safe and respectful school environment. Thank you for leading by example!
It is also on this day we pause to remember David Molak, a San Antonio student who took his own life after being cyberbullied in 2016. The day draws attention to helping end bullying, whether from person to person or through social media.
Senate Bill 179 was passed in 2017. This Bill empowered school districts and parents with tools for bullying prevention.
It provides for anonymous reporting for students, includes cyberbullying off campus and after school hours, and modifies the parental/guardian notification procedure. It provides flexibility in the disciplinary placement or the expulsion of students engaged in certain types of very serious bullying. It authorizes school principals to report certain incidents of bullying to local law enforcement and provides protection from liability for doing so.

Mental Health Day
October 10, 2024
Mental Health Day is a time to raise awareness for creating strong self-care practices centering around mental well-being. Self-care can be as simple as taking a brain break and sitting quietly for a minute, recognizing your breathing rhythm, closing your eyes for a second, and being mindful of your current state of mind and body. It can also extend to taking walks, eating with nutritional value, and feeling grateful for who you are, where you are, and who is around you. You can visit Healthy Children and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information and data.
Go Center
We have the Marines on Monday and Texas A&M Kingsville on Tuesday during lunch in the cafeteria. The Jack C Jordan scholarship is still open and we are still registering for the ASVAB Career Exploration on October 17th!
SAT Fee Waivers
Students can request a fee waiver directly from College Board. Eligible students can receive SAT fee waiver benefits by logging in to their College Board account and submitting a request. Learn more on the College Board website.
