A Message from the Principal...
Teacher appreciation week is coming up. May 5th through May 9th to be exact. Our teachers work darn hard to make sure students are receiving the instruction and support they need to be successful in the classroom. They do their job proudly and do the best they can day in and day out. If you have time, I know they would love to hear from you. If your child has a teacher who has made an impact on your child, please think about sending an email letting them know. Sometimes a little thank you is all we need! I know I am grateful for our teachers every day.
In this newsletter, we will cover the following:
- Shout Outs!
- Important Dates

Student Shout Outs!
I have a lot of student shout outs. So many good things happening across the campus!
We all know records are made to be broken. But how about when you break a record twice? Connie Squitieri has done just that. First he broke South’s school discus record with a throw of 167’4 at the Monroe meet and if that wasn’t good enough, he broke that record just a few short weeks later with a throw of 173’4. Congratulations Connie!
Here’s another one for you…..Congratulations to the Pointe Singers Treble Ensemble for receiving All-State Distinctions. They are one of twelve schools (out of 300) that have been selected to sing in the Michigan School Vocal Music Association in Lansing on May 9. This is the first time since 2006 that a South ensemble has been selected to sing at All-State. Good luck ladies!

AP Testing at South
I recently listened to a podcast where the guest was Dr. Lisa Damour, PhD, an expert in adolescent development. In the episode, she said one of her most common "prescriptions" to her adolescent clients is to get a job. With summer right around the corner, now is the time for your child to start job searching.
Teenagers grow in profound ways when they have a job, specifically one that isn't connected to a family member. This is supported by research conducted under the U.S. Department of Labor and organizations like the American Psychological Association. A summer job is so much more than a source of spending money for teens. It teaches accountability, resilience, work ethic, and how to take direction and feedback from someone other than their parents and teachers. Dr. Damour said that the most profound growth and maturation that she sees in her clients happens when they get a job. We hope that you can encourage your child to build their independence by applying for work over the summer!
