Term 2 Week 6

A Message From The Principal
Dear Parents/Carers,
Our term has been progressing well and students have been showing great progress in their learning.
Last week we observed National Reconciliation Week. The week is a time for us all to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements and to collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures. Classes participated in activities across the week which helps build children’s knowledge and understanding of our history and supports their understanding of how we can all work together for reconciliation.
This year one of our school plan focus areas is explicit teaching of mathematics through the daily review process. In the daily review teachers lead a quick review of key concepts through the processes of reciting, recalling and applying information. The reviews help children transfer knowledge form short term to long term memory. Daily reviews are delivered at the start of all Mathematics lessons for 15-20 minutes. They contain previously taught content and are usually presented in slides or flash card resources etc. Students use mini whiteboards or books to show their learning and are given immediate feedback. The process is being applied in all classrooms and we are seeing good impact in student remembering and applying information. I have been visiting classrooms to see the daily review and have noticed that it allows all children to participate and respond to embed the information in their memory. The apply phase also means children are using the information in a contextual way rather than just rote learning.
Thank you to all parents who are sending children to school in correct uniform. Correct uniform encourages a sense of belonging to and pride in our school. Correct uniform includes wearing of correct hat, jumper and jacket. Please make sure your child wears the correct uniform every day.
Attending school everyday is very important for children’s learning. When children have frequent absences or a long absence it means the miss out on important learning and may have gaps in what they know. Frequent absences can impact their friendships or can make them unhappy about coming to school when they should. Please make sure your child is at school every day that they can be. If you need to take an overseas trip please organise this during term time or close to school holidays. Extended leave may be marked as an unjustified absence and applications for extended leave must be made before the absence. If you are planning a trip please let the office know beforehand and complete the application prior to leaving.

Preschool
Reconciliation Week
Reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non indigenous peoples for the benefit of all Australians.
During Reconciliation Week our preschool children were involved in learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and identity (EYLF Outcome 2).
We discussed how we are learning on Darug land and we all joined in with our acknowledgment of country. We read some Dreamtime stories and painted our favourite parts of the story. Children were involved in a sensory finger painting experience using the Aboriginal Art symbols. These symbols are a visual language that communicates information about the cultural life of Indigenous Australians. The symbols are used to tell a story or share information. Children also decorated gum leaves as part of our whole school activities during Reconciliation Week.

Acknowledgment of Country Display 3-6X
3-6X worked together to create our Acknowledgement of Country wreath. We all decorated gum leaves and used nature to make our wreath beautiful. It says the Acknowledgement of Country that we use every day to honour the Darug people.

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program
Canberra Camp
In June students from our school will be undertaking an education tour of Canberra, the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
Peer Support
Friendships
We have commenced Peer Support this term. The whole school participates in Peer Support each Wednesday afternoon. 2 Peer Leaders facilitate a group of 8-10 younger students, who work together on several structured activities.
We are working on a module called Keeping Friends; helping explore the concept of friendship, building relationships and developing skills in empathy and critical thinking. The module runs for 8 sessions.
Peer Support - Keeping Friends - Weeks 4 to 6
In Week 4, children focused on the importance of support networks and the role of friends. They created a visual representation and were encouraged to identify supportive friends. Encourage your child to identify friends they had who could provide support if the need arose.
In Week 5, the focus was on playing in a friendly manner to maintain friendships and build positive relationships. Children participated in activities to learn about taking turns and consistent game rules, with encouragement to practice these skills with family and friends. Help your child practice these skills by encouraging them to play games with siblings, family, or friends.
In Week 6, children explored how to join groups and accept others into their friendship circles. Activities included practicing respectful ways to say no and coping with rejection. Parents are encouraged to discuss the significance of respectful communication and options available at school for children without playmates during breaks.
From the Library
Sydney Writer's Festival
On Friday 27th May a group of interested writers attended the Sydney Writer’s Festival at Riverside Theatres. What a fantastic day we had, it was raining outside by inside was warm and exciting. We had the opportunity to listen to 5 different authors, Joel McKerrow (a poet), Terri Libenson (a graphic novelist), Jacqueline Harvey, Jared Thomas and Katrina Nannestad (historian).
So much inspiration, Aarushan and Kenit were very impressed with Joel and encouraged the library to purchase one of his poetry books. Listening to Katrina Nannestad was the icing on a fabulous day. She spoke of how she researches for her novels, so inspiring! Then we got to meet the authors, have them sign our new books or a bookmark, Terri Libenson even drew us a picture on our bookmarks!
Attendance News
Attendance Matters-
we often receive requests from families wishing to take vacations during school term time. While we understand the desire to spend quality time together and explore new places, we would like to highlight the importance of regular school attendance and the potential implications of taking holidays during term.
Impact on Learning:
Regular attendance is crucial for your child's educational progress. Each lesson is designed to build on the previous one, and missing school can create gaps in understanding that may be difficult to bridge later. This is especially true for core subjects where foundational knowledge is essential for future learning.
Social and Emotional Development:
School is not just a place for academic learning; it is also a critical environment for socialisation and personal development. When children miss school, they miss out on important interactions with peers and teachers, which can impact their social skills and emotional well-being.
Curriculum Requirements:
The curriculum is structured to ensure that all students receive a comprehensive education. When students are absent, they may miss important assessments, projects, and group activities that are essential for their overall academic evaluation and development.
Making the Most of School Holidays:
We encourage families to plan vacations during the designated school holidays whenever possible. This allows your child to fully engage with their education while still enjoying family time and travel experiences.
