I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to the NMS community. I was recently hired to be the Library Media Specialist at Norwell Middle School, and I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know our students and staff. In an effort to keep families informed about what's happening in our library, I plan to send monthly newsletters to the school community. These newsletters will contain information about events, displays, newly acquired materials, etc. If I can ever be of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

** On Friday mornings, the library will open at 7:00 for students who would like to attend a First Chapter Fridays read aloud. The read aloud will begin at 7:10 and once it is completed, the library will open for all students.

Each Friday morning before school I plan to read the first chapter of a book to students in the library. The book that will be previewed will be announced by mid-week. The goal of this initiative is to foster reading for pleasure and to promote frequent library visits. Please encourage your children to stop by for the weekly read aloud. All are welcome!

Our first read aloud took place on September 28th, when students previewed The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty. Multiple copies are available in the library, but I don't anticipate they will spend much time on our shelves!

• Helping students navigate the physical and electronic library collections
• Curating materials and resources for upcoming projects and assignments
• Vetting websites or other resources

Students are welcome to visit the library before and after school, during flex time, and during directed studies. Regular library visits are both welcomed and encouraged!

The library may also be utilized by teachers who bring their classes to use the library classroom or computer lab for lessons and other assignments.

Last week in the library we celebrated Banned Books Week. Each September, libraries across America celebrate the freedom to read by observing this important event. It is a week dedicated to ensuring access to information as well as notifying the public about censorship. In 2017, the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 416 challenges to library and school materials.
