Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
September 6, 2024
We had a great week at the Lab! Mrs. Hart and I have visited all classrooms, both to see learning in action and to review expectations through the student handbook. We are excited about the wonderful leopards in our school family and the learning they are already engaged with in their classrooms.
We hope you will join us on Tuesday for Back to School Night! We will meet in the gym at 5:30 and then follow with breakout sessions by grade level / classroom. Families can enter through the gym or the main lobby. This is a great opportunity to get to know your school and your child's learning for this year in more detail.
This week, students did an excellent job with our first fire drill, all grade levels earned Free Choice Friday (for seats) in the cafeteria, and it was great to see the Leopard Spirit on display today! We want to say a huge THANK YOU again to some parents who lent us a hand in the cafeteria this week: Kim Harcum, Shannon Weiss, and Lisa Reagle. We were grateful to welcome Ms. Mary back to the cafeteria on Tuesday.
In partnership,
-Mr. McComb

Art Updates from Mr. Weigle
BCPS Device Management
On Wednesday, an email was sent to all LL Families to provide an update to BCPS practice regarding system-issued student devices. Please see the attached BCPS Department of Information Technology one-pager for additional details.
In short, last school year BCPS spent significant time and money on the replacement of broken devices and the school system believes that the current breakage rate is unsustainable. To address that rate and control associated costs of repair and/or replacement, the system is moving to a tiered system of financial responsibility for students and their parents/guardians for avoidable damage to devices.
At Lutherville, we understand that some accidents will occur and understand this practice from the school system as targeting damage that could or should have been avoided (reckless use or intentional breakage). Please join us in emphasizing to your child that they should not use the device near open liquids, and should carry their device carefully indoors and in their bags when travelling to and from school. At school, we are reinforcing these practices and expectations as well as inventorying each device with students to ensure they are in full, working order during the initial grace period that closes September 10th.

Respiratory Infection Guidance
Please see the guidance below from the Office of Health Services:
Students and staff who develop a respiratory infection (e.g., fever with cough, sore throat, and/or runny nose) should stay home until the fever is gone for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication and their symptoms are improving.
Health officials recommend that people with respiratory infections consult with their health care provider. Testing for COVID-19 and/or influenza is recommended for persons who are at higher risk for severe disease who might benefit from antiviral treatment and for those who have anticipated close contact for persons at higher risk for severe disease.
Persons returning to school and work after a respiratory infection are encouraged to use additional prevention strategies such as maintaining physical distance from others and wearing a mask for give (5) days.

Summer Reading Competition
Welcome back, students and families!
We are excited to start a new year of learning, and we look forward to finding out what you read over the summer! In June we sent the attached reading log and told you about a friendly competition with our neighboring school, Timonium ES. This is a reminder that logs are due before Sept. 13th so that we can tally up the totals and determine the winning school! If you participated in the BCPL summer reading program, you may transfer those minutes to the school logs and they will be counted in the competition. Please be sure to have your child write their name at the top of the log sheet before submitting it to their teacher. Thank you for your support and we'll see you at BTSN on Sept. 10th!
Sincerely,
Judy Henderson
