Principals' Greeting
Greetings Hiteon Community!
Welcome back, everyone! We hope you had a restful spring break, whether you traveled, had a staycation, or just rested and caught up with life. Hopefully, it was a time to relax and spend time with your family.
The remainder of the school year is a busy time. So much to do to finish this year strong! The calendar includes activities such as Kindergarten Orientation welcoming all our newest Hiteon Hawk families, state testing, Bingo Night, grade level field trips, and Fun Run, to name a few.
Spring brings opportunities for learning, growth, and connections with all our families at conferences on April 27 & 28. Teachers sent out their conference schedules on Tuesday, April 11.
Much appreciation to all of our families and community members for all you do to make Hiteon a wonderful place to learn.
Kind Regards,
Janet Maza, Principal
Jenny Read-Emslie, Assistant Principal

Hiteon's Daily Attendance Schedule
7:45 - Doors open & Cafeteria opens for breakfast
8:00 - School promptly begins
2:35 - Dismissal
Attendance is very important to student success!
According to BSD policy absences that are not medical in nature, such as vacations, will be marked as unexcused absence.
Tardy: School begins promptly at 8:00am.
Students that are not seated at their desk at 8:00am are considered tardy.
Unless they are in the cafeteria having breakfast. Unfortunately, this means that students that are in vehicles in the parking lot are still considered late if they enter the building at 8:01am.
Early Arrival: For your child’s safety, students must NOT arrive at school before 7:45am there is no adult supervision prior to 7:45.
Dismissal: Again, for student safety, all students must be picked up from school at dismissal time 2:35pm. There is no supervision after 2:35. Unless the student is involved in a supervised after-school activity. Students who stay on school property past dismissal of 2:35pm must have parent supervision.

Testing Opt-Out Letter Information for 3, 4 & 5 Grades
Dear Hiteon Families,
This spring, students in grades 3 – 8 and 11 in the Beaverton School District and throughout Oregon will take state tests (Smarter Balanced) in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Our fifth graders will also test in Science.
In addition to content standards, these assessments are designed to measure critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. The test results provide you, our schools, our district, and the state with information about how well we are preparing our students for their next steps, including college and career readiness.
Our students will take these tests once between January and June 2020. House Bill 2655 permits parents and adult students to annually opt out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting a form to the school the student attends. The school shall provide any student who is exempted from a state test with supervised study time while other students are testing.
These tests include:
English language arts and mathematics summative tests for students in grades 3-8 and grade 11.
Science summative tests for students in grades 5, 8, and 11.
English language proficiency tests for all students eligible for the English Learner program.
These tests provide a snapshot of your student’s progress, help your child’s school, as well as the district, identify groups of students that may need additional support, and provide information to the state, which is used to make funding decisions.
If you do NOT want your student to take the English language arts or math assessment tests, please complete the opt-out form at the bottom of this webpage or click on the links below.
English Language Arts & Math Opt Out Form
For science or English language proficiency tests, a separate form requesting an exemption based on either religion or disability.
Science or English Language Proficiency Tests Opt Out Form
These forms should be turned in to Hiteon by April 8. If you have any questions about state testing, please contact:
Dawn Trout-dawn_trout@beaverton.k12.or.us
Best Regards,
The Hiteon Team

After School on the Playground
We need to address the use of the playground after school. Many students and their families stay after school dismissal to play and enjoy time outside with their friends. We absolutely support this activity for our families.
Our preference is for parents to supervise this time. We have been getting reports about unsafe behavior during this time. We ask that students follow Hiteon’s playground expectations when they are playing after school. Parents, we are sharing them with you so that you can support this.
Currently, Champions before and after school program utilizes the playground for the students in their care. We must ensure their safety on the playground after school. If we cannot provide this with our current open playground policy in place, we will need to reevaluate the use of the playground immediately after dismissal.
Safe:
Walking and skipping are OK on concrete and bark chips
Running is OK when it is on the grass
Keep the bark chips on the ground
Safe hands, safe feet, personal space—capture games or games with pretend weapons are never allowed
Kind:
Invite everyone to play—all games are open
Show good sportsmanship by following the rules
Respectful:
Keep out of planted areas to let them grow.
Respect the equipment—use the equipment the proper way
Thank you all for helping to keep Hiteon’s playground (and students) safe, kind, and respectful.

Cell Phone & Smart Watch Policy at School
Please help us ensure that students with their cell phones and smart watches at Hiteon follow the expectations outlined below.
Many students, especially in our older grades, have their cell phones with them. They often use it before or after school to communicate with their families. This is understandable and acceptable.
However, we need to ensure students are NOT using their cell phones or smart watches and calling family during school hours. It is important if a student is not feeling well or needs something brought to school that, those calls go through the main school office.
Cell phones and smart watches may be used on school grounds before school and after school only.
During the instructional day, cell phones must remain out of sight and in silent mode.
If students need to place an emergency phone call during the school day, they should request to go to the main office to use an office phone.
Thank you all for your assistance in reminding your children about only using their cell phones before or after school.

Hiteon's Garden Fundraiser
Our Upper EGC is working to raise money for our school garden. It would mean the world to us and our school community if you could help our Beaverton Education Fund (BEF) project!
BEF will match anything we raise. Last year we raised about $450 for our garden with our garden sale. We are looking to add more garden boxes, a greenhouse, some garden decor, etc. Please visit our link below.

School Wide Frog Guessing Game in the Library
We have two wonderful students (Decon and Emma) make a school wide frog guessing game...it's in the library.
All students will get to guess how many frogs are in the jar during their library rotation. Staff will also have a chance to guess.
Prizes will be awarded to the five closest guesses by students and one prize for the closest guess by a staff member.
Thanks Decon and Emma for bringing some fun to the library and to Hiteon.

April is Earth Month
Walking and Rolling is Good for the Earth!
April is the month we celebrate Earth Day and one way you can help our planet and combat climate change is to replace car trips with active ones! 2 miles of driving = 1.6 lbs of carbon emissions. Think about local car trips that your family takes often. Maybe it is a trip to the park or a friend’s house. Map your route and try walking or biking instead. We often think places are farther than they seem. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your location and be amazed at what your body can do for you!
