Greetings Sports Fans!
It is hard to believe that we are in the final weeks of the Spring Season! And what a Spring Season it has been! This past week was certainly evident of that.
Our Track Program headed over to Jesuit High School for the Twilight Relays and we had quite a showing! Asher Danielson ran the fastest time in the PIL and now the 4th fastest time in state history in the mile! Avery Coker came in first in the 100M hurdle. Tilda Hathaway finished 6th in the 100M and the 4X100 Team finished 3rd! Our Varsity Baseball Program swept the Riders or Roosevelt and have a huge week this week with a three-game series with Lincoln that will put either team in the driver seat to be League Champions. Our Softball Program had a big week, as well, beating both Roosevelt and Lincoln. They also have a huge week with important games against Cleveland, Franklin, and Grant. The Women’s Lacrosse Program took down Hood River and Central Catholic this past week with games against OES and Lincoln this week. Both of our Tennis Programs have three matches left with Grant, Benson, and McDaniel before they prepare for the District Meet. Finally, our Golf Programs have had a great year again. Lucia Donovan is gearing up for a run at state and the Men’s Program is chasing that elusive PIL crown. Both teams have their last PIL Final tomorrow!

GUARDIANS ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Baseball
Cody Roletto, Junior
Golf - Men
Lucas Devlin, Senior
As the year is winding down, the boys golf team have secured their spot into the State tournament with 1 match left to play. The Guardian Men have won 4 of their first 5 events in the PIL and placed high in outside tournaments. Leading the way for the Guardians is Lucas Devlin. In his last three major events, he has risen to the challenge each time shooting low 70's. He finished T-6th place at the State Preview which led the team to a third place finish. This week's Athlete of the Week belongs to Lucas Devlin. Cheers to Lucas!!!
Golf - Women
Elise Madore, Junior
Elise shot her best round of the season last week at Heron Lakes - Great Blue, finishing the round on fire with 6 straight pars. She shot the best back 9 out of every player in the league, a testament to the work she's put in this season to continue to improve and stay consistent. Elise has been a great leader and role model for the rest of the team, helping other Wells athletes grow and get better everyday. As we head into the last match of league play Tuesday at Heron Lakes, Elise is in position to finish in the top 5 and cement herself as the best junior golfer in the PIL.

Ryder Cullen-Musengo, Senior
Our athlete of the week this week is Ryder Cullen-Musengo. Ryder is a senior and a captain and helps lead our attack. She's able to observe the field and what needs to happen for attack to be successful. She's constantly setting up plays for other players and cheering teammates on.
Softball
Sam Stevens, Sophomore
Sam Stevens has been named IBW Softball's Athlete of the Week for her commitment, performance, and honorable character. As a result of her outstanding dedication, impressive attendance at pre-season workouts, and zero period weight room sessions, Sam achieved a significant milestone this week: her 200th career high school strikeout. Her pitching prowess is undeniable with several coaches and umpires commenting on her ability, but she's also proving to be a valuable asset to the team's lineup by consistently delivering quality at-bats. This week alone, Sam strategically contributed to three RBIs with well-timed hits. Additionally, her high character has not gone unnoticed, as numerous individuals have taken the opportunity to commend her for her leadership in the classroom and her work with youth softball programs. Both IBW and the wider southwest softball community are privileged to have Sam as part of the team. Congratulations Sam!
Tennis - Men
Jacob Feinberg, Freshman
Jacob has been a welcomed asset to the team this season offering us reliability at both singles and doubles. He pulled out a crucial win for us 6-1,6-1 against Corvallis at 4 singles to win the dual 5-3. Jacob is a crafty left handed player who excels at moving people around the court. This last week he helped us beat Roosevelt 7-1 with a 6-0,6-0 win at 4 doubles. He has shown great match composure and earned some decisive wins in his first season. Go Guards!

Asher Danielson, Senior

Avery Coker, Junior
Avery bettered her school record in the 100 hurdles at the elite Twilight Relays on Friday. She ran a state #2 time of 14.72 just a few hundredths off the lead. She is our school record holder in both hurdle races and runs our #2 Ida B Wells 4x100 team and Ida B Wells #5 all time 4x400 team. She is also an incredible leader and respected and cared for by athletes from all over our state. She inspires her teammates with her calm and steady competitiveness and her dedication to her sport and team.

Staff Appreciation Pancake Breakfast
On Tuesday, May 7th, the Athletic Department along with members of the Athletic Leadership Council are hosting a now "annual" pancake breakfast for our teachers for Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week. Because we are unable to use any athletic funds that are tied into Student Body Funds for teachers/staff/coaches, we are looking for donations to to purchase the supplies needed for the breakfast. For ease (not purchasing the items and getting them to school), instead please make a donation by using Venmo to Leanne Van Horn @Leanne-VanHorn
Any additional funds collected will also be used for a Coaches End-of-Year Celebration hosted by Mike.

Counselor, Danny Bradach, joins Softball program
This is Danny Bradach's first year coaching softball at Ida B. Wells. He has been a school counselor here for the past nine years and also coaches football and Unified Basketball at IBW. He has more than ten years of experience coaching middle school and high school football and also coached his own children in little league, from T-Ball up through AA. Coach Bradach grew up in Portland and previously worked as a counselor and coach at Parkrose, Marshall, and Madison (now McDaniel) High Schools. He is very familiar with the PIL, having also coached football at Benson and Grant High Schools. He is married and has two kids--one in middle school and one in elementary--and enjoys working with the JV Guardians. His top priority for the team is to have fun, treat each other with respect, and become better softball players and people by the end of the season.
We are so grateful to have Coach Danny join us this season. He is an asset on the field and in the front office at IBW. I personally enjoy how excited he gets when someone hits the ball really hard. I would describe it as a 7 year old boy watching a NASA or SpaceX rocket launch at Cape Canaveral. Pure joy!

The 2024 Heart walk will be on June 1st and the Athletic Department has put together a team named the Guardians. We hope to have Student-Athletes, parents, staff, community members join our team!

The College Signing Day Ceremony has been set for May 22nd during Flex Time.

The IBW Athletic Leadership Council will be heading down to Jackson Middle School during their lunch on May 14th to help promote and have some fun games for prizes.

Slowing down can help you establish deeper and more authentic connections with your loved ones, colleagues, and friends. It enables you to listen more attentively, speak more honestly, and express your emotions more affectionately. 4. The Wisdom of Your Intuition.
When you slow down, you open yourself up to your intuition and inner guidance, which often knows more than your logical mind.
