SAFETY FIRST - ALWAYS
Since September 5th, Courage2Report has received multiple anonymous reports of threats made against schools in Missouri and nationwide. Unfortunately, a trend we have seen over the last two weeks is many of these school shooting and bomb threats are being communicated through suicide or crisis help chat lines and are being passed along to law enforcement, SROs, and school administration. To date, these threats have been non-credible. We continue to treat all threats as credible and follow our protocols until it can be determined the threat has no validity. Our steps are as follows:
- Treat the threat as initially credible
- Engage law enforcement to determine what resources are needed to ensure safety
- Gather as much information about the threat as possible
- Modify our initial response based on further information
- Resolve the threat
- Communicate with families when appropriate throughout the incident and when the emergency has been resolved.
As I have mentioned many times in my monthly newsletters, safety is paramount in our daily routines. We have safety protocols, crisis communications plan, and continued dialogue about safety and security. We do need your help. Please take time to speak to your children about the severity of these types of threats. They are taken seriously and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It is not a joke nor will the situation be taken lightly. Encourage them – if they See Something Say Something to a trusted adult, not reshare it on social media.
Part of our Crisis Communication plan includes communication to you about what you can expect in the event of an emergency. You can read that letter here.
IMPORTANT OCTOBER DATES
Today, October 2nd is recognized as National Custodian and Maintenance Day. Every educator knows it: Schools would literally fall apart if it weren’t for the custodial staff. They keep our school running every single day (even when your latest craft project involves major glitter spills), giving students clean and tidy spaces to learn and grow. While we think they deserve to be celebrated every single day, National Custodian Day is the one day the calendar set aside just for them. I am so appreciative of the daily efforts of our custodial/maintenance staff.
The week of October 21-25th is National School Bus Safety Week. It is an excellent way for parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus drivers, and school administrators to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety.
Red Ribbon Week is also in October. This year it is observed during the week of Oct. 23rd and the theme is “Life is a movie, Live Drug Free” Red Ribbon Week is the largest drug-abuse prevention campaign in the United States. Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.
PD Day - No school on Monday, October 7. Our PD days are very important to the overall success of our school district. It is designated time for teachers to learn new skills and techniques. It also allows uninterrupted time for them to learn best practices from each other.
INCLEMENT WEATHER
Reminder about Inclement Weather Days - I hope we don't need to even think about this for a while but I want to remind everyone that the first 4 days missed due to weather will be traditional snow days and made up at the end of the school year (with the final attendance day no later than May 23rd).
NOTEWORTHY
Mrs. Therrell Named Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award Winner
High school English/Language Arts (ELA) teacher Mrs. Tiffany Therrell was named the Festus R-VI School District's Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award winner. Mrs. Therrell is a Festus graduate and has been a teacher at Festus for 19 years. Several teachers nominated Mrs. Therrell for this award. In their nominations they said, "Mrs. Therrell not only does an excellent job at planning curriculum that is relevant for her 9th grade students, but she puts her heart into everything she does. She finds ways to connect with even the most closed off kids. Year after year, she demonstrates love and compassion for all of her students."

Intermediate Buddy Bench Dedication
The Intermediate School held a dedication Tuesday for the new "buddy bench" that is on the playground. It was donated by the Morgan Anderson S3 Foundation and is made from plastic bottle tops that students collected last year. The buddy bench is meant to be a place where students who feel lonely our out of place can sit and other students will come talk to them and make them feel welcome.
Morgan Anderson was a 6th grade student at Festus Intermediate School when she passed away in 2019 from the affects of an asthma attack. The Morgan Anderson S3 Foundation was founded by her family to carry on her legacy of helping other people.
Grandparents Days
The Elementary School wrapped up four days of first grade grandparents days this week. During the time at the school grandparents and students worked on a special project that grandparents took home with them. Everyone said they enjoyed their experience. Kindergarten will have their grandparents days in November.
