News from Winfield Elementary: February 7, 2025
From the Principals, Mrs. Alonzo & Mrs. Hall
Dear Winfield Families,
Research shows that children who read—or are read to—at least 20 minutes each night are exposed to nearly 1.8 million words per year! Studies from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development highlight that consistent reading improves vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, and overall academic success. Reading at home also strengthens family bonds and nurtures a lifelong love of learning.
To help make nightly reading a rewarding habit, here are three research-backed strategies:
📖 Make Reading Interactive – Ask open-ended questions like “What do you think will happen next?” or “Why do you think the character made that choice?” This improves comprehension and critical thinking skills.
📚 Offer Choice – Let your child pick books that interest them, whether it’s a favorite story, graphic novel, or nonfiction topic. When kids enjoy what they read, they are more likely to develop a love for books.
⏳ Create a Routine – Set aside the same time each evening for reading, whether it’s before bed or after dinner. A consistent schedule reinforces the habit and makes reading a natural part of your family’s day.
By making nightly reading a priority, you are giving your child a powerful gift—one that will benefit them for years to come. Thank you for partnering with us in fostering strong readers and lifelong learners!
Happy reading!

From the Nurse
Please send an extra change of clothing for your child to keep in their locker. Accidents happen on the playground, at lunch or in the classroom that sometimes requires a change of clothing. We have a small amount of clothing to lend out to students as needed, but everyone feels most comfortable in their own clothes!
