FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS: An Important Skill for Kindergartners
The ability to follow directions is a fundamental life skill that benefits children both now and in the future. Whether at home, school, the playground, or a friend's house, following directions is essential for safety. Simple actions like not wandering off in public places and holding an adult's hand when crossing the street can make a significant difference during stressful situations and emergencies.
In this week's newsletter, we will provide families with tips on how to help their children follow directions at home and in the classroom. We will also share some videos that you and your child can watch to practice this skill. Additionally, we will suggest games and activities that you and your child can enjoy together to reinforce the importance of following directions.
We are only one month away from the start of Kindergarten! With just 30 days to go, L.P.S. eagerly looks forward to welcoming you.

What Does Listens and Follows Directions Mean?
This skill means a child can do what a parent or teacher asks them to do. The child shows they are listening by following the instructions as best as they can. For kindergarten children, directions with two or three steps are appropriate. For example, “Push in your chair and put your plate in the sink.” Directions with too many steps can be confusing for young children and shouldn’t be used. This skill is important because it shows that the child can pay attention and follow instructions.

Minutes for Parents: Start a dialogue with your child's teacher
Parents are their children's first and most important teachers. By encouraging kids to listen to and follow directions at home, parents help prepare them for success in the classroom. It's essential for parents to make time to communicate with their kindergartener's teacher, ensuring they understand and support the expectations and routines of the school environment. This collaboration between parents and teachers fosters a supportive learning atmosphere where children can thrive.
