Clague Book Bowl Events
7th Grade Book Bowl Competition will take place Dec. 13
We have two teams of 7th graders who have read three books over the past three months and met weekly to prepare for the book bowl competition which will take place during 1st hour on December 13. Teams will meet head-to-head in a light-hearted buzzer style competition to test their speed and knowledge about the books they have read, which were "Ghost" by Jason Reynolds, "The Dragon Pearl" by Yoon Ha Lee and "A Mango-Shaped Space" by Wendy Mass.
On November 14, book bowl participants had the opportunity to meet virtually with author Yoon Ha Lee. Students had the chance to ask questions and to learn more about the process of writing and publishing a book. It was an amazing visit!
6th Grade Book Bowl Begins in January!
We are in the process of recruiting students as well as parent volunteer coaches for the 6th grade book bowl which will officially begin in January after winter break and run through March. For more information about the book bowl, click here: https://claguemediacenter.weebly.com/6th-grade-book-bowl.html. If you wish to coach a team and are available one day a week (you choose the day) from 11:48-12:09, please contact Mrs. McLean at mcleank@aaps.k12.mi.us.
Clague Students Say "Thank You" to All Who Serve
Every November, Clague students participate in a letter writing drive as a way to thank our Veterans, Deployed Troops, Wounded Warriors and First Responders. Students are given the option to hand write a letter, draft a poem or even draw a picture expressing their appreciation and honoring those who serve and help protect our country. This year, we collected over 250 letters which will be sent along with care packages through the Operation Gratitude Organization. To learn more about Operation Gratitude, click here!
Squirrel Shenanigans in the Clague Courtyard
In the Fall, it is normal for squirrels to increase their activity as they gather food to hide away for the long winter ahead, Indeed, over the last few weeks, we have noticed increased activity from the squirrels in the courtyard. They run and stop in fits, wildly chase each other and are literally climbing the walls of the school! One squirrel, in particular, climbs up the window onto the screen and hangs by his claws in an effort to get to the window ledge on top, only to then claw his way back down the screen. It has caused a great amount of entertainment as well as unfortunately, a bit of a distraction. The squirrels seem to peak in their activity in the afternoon, after lunch.
Several A2 Virtual Clague students, who sit at the desks facing the library courtyard, share their experience:
"Hi, this is Talin and Miles! We are here to tell you about the crazy squirrels we have witnessed in the courtyard during the 6th hour. So there are 3 different squirrels, they all have their unique qualities (that are not so good all the time). So we have come up with names for them, Harry, Jerry, and Larry. (Names by Taym S.) Harry is kind of like the main focus, he is always jumping on the windows of our library, he chases the other squirrels around and fights with them. He has a bushy tail and is a bit skinnier than the others. Jerry is usually the one who gets beat up by Harry, very occasionally he will come to greet us on the branch in front of the window. He has a medium sized tail, and is bigger than the others. And finally, Larry. Larry is an introvert who likes to hide in the trees and stay away from others, he rarely plays and is always looking for food on the ground. He has a very skinny tail and is medium sized. So as you can tell, these are not any ordinary squirrels! Maybe next time you come to the library, you will find them in the courtyard. "
Each month the library adds 30-50 new titles to the collection. Below are just a few of the new, highlighted titles!

Review:
"I liked this book because it was a "good amount of scary". I am not a true fan of horror, but this book had enough creepiness to keep you on edge but not enough to keep you up at night! Whether you believe in monsters or not, you will be able to suspend disbelief while being engaged in this page turner!"--Mrs. McLean
The False Prince
By Jennifer A. Nielson
Overview:

Review:
"I really, really enjoyed this book in 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade! The unexpected plot twist midway through and how nicely it was concealed all while foreshadowing it would happen!! It's just an ingenious story and the more I re-read the more details I can find! This is honestly a nice book. There are 4 books in the Ascendance series: The Runaway King, A Shadow Throne, The Captive Kingdom, and The Shattered Castle!"--Elin V. (Clague Student)
The Last Mapmaker
by Christina Soontornvat

Joining an expedition to chart the southern seas, twelve-year-old mapmaker's assistant Sai, posing as a well-bred young lady with a glittering future, realizes she's not the only one on board harboring secrets when she discovers the ship's true destination--Destiny
Review:
This Thai-inspired fantasy adventure book was awarded a Newbery Honor award in 2023 and it is well-deserved! The action and adventure will propel you forward as we follow Sai on her journey to chart the southern seas. Sai discovers that she is not the only person on board who has secrets, and ultimately has to decide how many secrets she is willing to keep if she wants to pursue her dream of a new life.--Mrs. McLean
Congratulations to Alexandra C. and Penny M.
