FULL TEXT OF DR. PEPUKAYI'S SEPTEMBER 26 UPDATE
Hello TCPS Families!
I am recording this week’s update at the St. Michaels Campus, where I am about to hold my first Staff Roundtable of the school year. The roundtables are a great opportunity for me to share updates about our priorities as a district, gather feedback from school teams, and answer any questions they may have.
Alex Boye is here this week, presenting his acclaimed show, “You are a 10” for students in grades 3 -12. His performance promotes positive self-image, resilience, mental health, and self-love, through the universal language of music. We were also able to include two evening performances for parents!
As a reminder, Friday, September 27th is an early dismissal day for students, with secondary conferences and elementary teacher in service in the afternoon.
Saturday, September 28 our community hosts our annual Frederick Douglas Day celebration in downtown Easton from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. This is a great opportunity to see our bands perform and enjoy various performances and activities in celebration of one of Talbot County’s most notable historic figures.
Have a great weekend and remember, it’s always a great day for success at TCPS.
CALENDAR REMINDER
This is a reminder that Friday September 27 is an early dismissal day for all TCPS students, with secondary parent conferences and elementary teacher in-service in the afternoon.

Despite political and social polarization, folks still come together on issues that unite us. What could be more binding than literacy? Differences on education methods exist, but not on the importance of ensuring everyone learns to read. In a recent event at the Library of Congress, David Banks, the Chancellor of NYC Public Schools, suggested, 'we all need to work together to deal with this crisis’. Setting the example, in just the two years since assuming the helm as Chancellor, he has implemented NYC Reads, a standard curriculum of teaching kids to read across the entire NYC school system.
On short notice, but with the fortunate backing of J2W Foundation in support of the Campaign for Grade Level Reading, a national organization with over 350 communities networked that are laser focused on the predictive indicator of 3rd grade reading, the film will be screened here on Sunday, September 29th, at North Dorchester High School. Following the film, a panel of local leaders and educators will discuss the pathways to improving outcomes and achieving grade level literacy by the third grade.
Al Sikes, one of the founders of READ Alliance, will moderate the discussion.
Panelists:
Cristy Morrell Executive Director Critchlow Adkins
Sharon Pepukayi Superintendent Talbot County Public Schools
James Redman Principal Polaris Village Academy
Jymil Thompson Superintendent Dorchester County Public Schools

WHAT IS TALBOT GOES PURPLE?
Talbot Goes Purple is a substance abuse awareness program that engages our community and youth to stand against substance abuse. TGP is a prevention initiative, and focuses on evidence-based programs and activities with local youth.
The project is based upon THP Project Purple, an initiative of The Herren Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation established by former NBA basketball player, Chris Herren, that assists individuals and families struggling with addiction. To learn more about the Talbot Goes Purple initiative, click on the image or follow "Talbot Goes Purple" on Facebook.
Young people who use e-cigs are more likely to smoke cigarettes in the future.
Help save lives! Lock up your prescription medications.
Using marijuana at a young age can lead to a greater risk of developing a substance use disorder later in life.
REQUESTING TRANSPORTATION
Prior to the start of each school year, TCPS is requiring parents to opt in for student transportation to and from school. This information will result in more efficient transportation operation by providing the Office of Student Transportation accurate ridership data. Families will be emailed a link to a Transportation Request form in the month of July to request or decline transportation. Families that do not complete the form for each child will be opted out of transportation services for the school year.
Please note, parents with a student who has transportation provided as part of an IEP will not be affected as eligibility for special needs transportation is determined as part of a separate IEP process.
Students must attend their home school based on their residence in order to receive bus service.
Students attending a school other than their home school are not eligible.
Families can opt back in for transportation at any time, as long as the student qualifies for busing services. The TCPS Student Transportation Request form can be found on our website.
