Participant Information
Target Audience:
K-12 special education teachers, special education liaisons, school counselors, school psychologists, social workers, building principals, agency personnel, interventionists, & coaches
Act 48 Hours:
- 15 (fifteen) Act 48 hours, 5 per session, will be awarded at the end of the series.
- Participants MUST attend all three sessions. No partial Act 48 Hours will be given.
Cost: There is no cost to attend this training series.
Registration Priority: Educators who work for LEAs in the AIU3 region will have priority registration.
Registration / Session Information
Day 1: Behavior Basics & The FBA Process
Session Overview: Participants will review behavior analytic principles and terminology, discuss functions of behavior, and debrief about common pitfalls when conducting Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and designing Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSPs). The components of a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and data collection methods will be reviewed. Time will be allotted to exploring the Initial Line of Inquiry tool and discuss how it supports teams in information gathering, defining target behaviors, and identifying additional data needs.
Day 2: Developing a Function Based PBSP
Session Overview: Participants will be introduced to the components of a Positive Behavior Support Plan (PBSP). The importance of teaching and practicing replacement behaviors to build up students' skill repertoire will be discussed. Time will also be spent learning how to select antecedent strategies, replacement behavior skills, and consequence interventions that correspond to the hypothesized function(s) of behavior.
Day 3: The PBSP in Action (Crisis Planning, IEP Alignment and Implementation Fidelity)
Session Overview: Participants will learn about the stages of crisis and discuss connections to trauma. Time will be spent on understanding staff and student responses during a behavioral crisis. A template and strategies for developing a crisis plan will be reviewed. Addtionally, participants will learn how to interpret behavior data and write a focused summary of the data as part of the FBA, PBSP, and the present levels of functional performance section of the IEP. Development of measurable and meaningful IEP goals, specially designed instruction (SDI), and how to collect and analyze progressing monitoring data will be shared. Considerations to support effective staffing and implementation fidelity will also be discussed.
