A Message From Mrs. Bryant
How to Support Your 3rd-5th Grade Student at Home
Helping your child succeed in reading and writing doesn’t have to be difficult! Here are some simple ways you can support your 3rd through 5th-grade student’s ELA learning at home based on the new South Carolina standards:
For 3rd Grade:
- Read Together: Spend time reading a variety of books with your child. Ask questions like “What’s the central idea of this story?” or “Who is your favorite character and why?”
- Talk About What They’re Reading: Encourage your child to explain what they’re reading and share their thoughts about the story or information. This helps with comprehension and builds confidence in discussing ideas.
- Practice Writing: Have your child write about things they enjoy, like a short story or a letter to a family member. Help them organize their thoughts with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
- Word Games: Play vocabulary games, such as crossword puzzles, to build their vocabulary in a fun way.
For 4th Grade:
- Ask Deeper Questions: When reading, ask questions that go beyond the surface, like “Why do you think the character made that choice?” or “How is this text like something else you’ve read?”
- Encourage Research: Have your child explore topics they’re interested in and write a short report or summary. This helps with organizing information and supporting ideas with facts.
- Engage in Discussions: Practice having meaningful conversations by asking your child to explain their opinion on a topic and provide reasons to support their thinking.
- Use Context Clues: When your child encounters a new word, encourage them to figure out its meaning by looking at the surrounding words or sentences for clues.
For 5th Grade:
- Promote Independent Reading: Encourage your child to read a mix of fiction and nonfiction books. Ask questions that help them think critically, such as “How do you think the author supports the central of this text?”
- Support Writing Projects: Encourage your child to write essays, reports, or personal stories at home on topic that they enjoy. Help them edit for clarity and organization, and ensure they use evidence to support their points.
- Have Debates or Discussions: Talk about current events, books, or family decisions, and ask your child to present their opinions with reasons. This helps with speaking and listening skills.
- Work on Vocabulary: Help your child learn new words by discussing the meaning of words in context. Point out figurative language in books or conversations and ask your child what the expressions mean.
