Supporting Students’ Mother Tongue
According to the IB Programme Standards and Practices the school must ensure that students learn a language in addition to the language of instruction (at least from the age of seven). Our language of instruction is English and to support the development of a second language students have Spanish classes in their specials rotation.
Additionally, the IB standard C4.2 states "the school recognizes multilingualism as a fact, a right and a resource for learning." This is also referred to as the Mother Tongue development. The mother tongue is a student's native language, first language, heritage language such as Spanish, Haitian Creole or Portuguese.
Many studies explain that a strong mother tongue supports the learning of an additional language. Language experts emphasized that students who maintain their proficiency in their mother tongue learn another language quickly. Linguist Jim Cummins stressed that children who have a strong foundation in their mother tongue develop stronger literacy abilities in the school language (Google Scholar).
One way to nurture students’ home language is to provide enriching literature in their mother tongue. We support this development by having an International Reading Area (Mother Tongue Section) in our school library. In this section students will find a variety of books in their native language as a resource for language learning.
How can parents help? Parents should view themselves as partners with the school in teaching children their native language. At home, parents can read to their children in their mother tongue and provide materials in their own language.
Parents, we need your help! To support this resource for learning we would like to receive donations of books in your mother tongue. These donations will be placed in our International Children's Library section (Mother Tongue) and will be used by our school community to enrich student learning. We would greatly appreciate any donation of gently used or new books that can be dropped off at the front desk.
Thank you for your support in keeping our school internationally minded!

Important Arrival/Dismissal Time Reminders for Elementary and Middle School
AM Carline Reminder:
For our elementary school students, we have noticed that there is little to no line to drop off students at 7:20 am, which provides an excellent opportunity for a smooth and stress-free drop-off experience. To give your child ample time to settle in and be ready for the start of their classes at 7:30 am, we kindly request that you aim to arrive prior to 7:30 am. Any student arriving late to school (7:30 AM for Elementary students and 8:30 AM for Middle School Students) will be marked as tardy. Parents will be required to park their vehicle and report to the front office to sign in your child. You will be required to bring in your ID to scan it through Raptor to record the tardy.
PM Carline Reminder:
For the safety of everyone involved and to prevent traffic congestion that can lead to accidents, we kindly request that you do not park your vehicles on Military Trail or Miner Road during dismissal times.
We understand that waiting can sometimes be inconvenient, but we encourage you to plan your arrival between 2:15 and 2:30 PM. This will not only reduce your wait time but also contribute to a safer and more organized dismissal process.
Please be aware that the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) has informed us that they will be issuing fines to individuals who park on Military Trail and Miner Road. We want to avoid any unnecessary fines and, more importantly, prioritize the safety of our school community.
Your cooperation in following these parking guidelines is greatly appreciated, as it ensures the well-being of all our students and families. Together, we can create a safer and more efficient dismissal experience.
Important Reminder: Uniform Policy Adherence
We would like to take a moment to remind everyone about the importance of adhering to our school's uniform policy.
Our uniform policy plays a crucial role in maintaining a focused and disciplined learning environment, and it helps instill a sense of unity and pride among our students. To ensure that these objectives are met, we kindly request your cooperation in ensuring that your child is in proper uniform when attending school.
We are now enforcing the uniform policy, and students found out of uniform will receive infractions. We believe this step is necessary to uphold the standards we have set for our school community.
We understand that there may be instances where items are on back order. In such cases, we kindly request that you send an email to Mrs. L'Etoile at letoile.alison@franklin-academy.org with either the iUniforms receipt for the items you've ordered or an email confirmation indicating that the items are on back order. This will help us keep track of any delays and ensure that students are not penalized for circumstances beyond their control.
Please remember that all uniform items must be purchased through iUniforms to maintain consistency in quality and design. http://www.iuniforms.com/
We greatly appreciate your support and understanding in this matter.
