The Patrick Henry Post
December 11th, 2020
Thank you for your commitment to safety!
This week, we welcomed our in-person learners back into Patrick Henry and continued our virtual learning home program. We must say thank you to all of our families who complied with the district's safety guidelines to ensure that all students and staff remain healthy and safe. We are so proud to announce that we still have a transmission rate of ZERO, meaning no student or staff has contracted the virus from a Patrick Henry student or staff member. This is only possible because our staff, students, and families work together to meet our safety needs. Particularly at this time of the year we are reminded of how important family is to all of us, and we are so thankful that we are able to spend time with our families in a healthy and safe way. Thank you to our Patrick Henry community for coming together and committing to safety!
Highlight on Instructional Time
This week was a fantastic week of academic achievement and pushing students to reach their potential in the instructional world. As I visited classrooms in person and virtually, I saw such strong levels of engagement that it made me want to join in the fun of learning. Thank you to all of our teachers who produced fun, exciting, and challenging lessons, and thank you to all of our students who fully engaged in the work this week!
Ms. Versen's Read Aloud
Ms. Versen's class enjoyed a holiday-filled read aloud this week and then answered comprehension questions based on what they saw, heard, and read!
Tic Tac Toe
Ms. Griffin had a great idea to incorporate extra practice with sight words. She took words they struggled with and words they identified correctly and played tic tac toe with them, requiring the student to identify the word before they were allowed to mark it off.
Dancing Happiness
Ja'Nayla was able to end one of her meetings with a disco dance, and it left her smiling ear to ear!
Building Blocks
Ms. Munnelly's block center is a popular place as students get to work with different sizes, shapes, and colors to build structures and create imaginative games out of their constructions.
3rd Grade Focus
This photo was taken directly after breakfast, when 3rd graders immediately transitioned into their academic day. It was great to see their focus and concentration as most of them didn't even notice me visiting the classroom!
Mitten Meeting
First graders in Ms. Butler's class proudly show off their artistic creations they made with Ms. Bryant on Wednesday. They received a shout-out for how much growth they have experienced over the last semester of school.
Volunteer Time
Journey was able to connect with one of our Washington University volunteers this week through Teams. Their conversation was fun for eavesdropping as they worked through "would you rather" questions.
Volunteer Time
Kayla also got some individual time with her WashU volunteer team as they worked through problem-solving this week.
Coloring Station
This photo captured a moment of relaxation as the art world took over center time. It was fun to hear why these specific colors were chosen and how the artist felt about them.
Imaginative Play
Ronald used his center time to construct several duplo buildings, each of which had a story to go with it. It was fun to hear his explanations of each structure, and even more fun to see them topple!
Individual Activities
The tray system in Ms. Munnelly's room allows for every student to work independently and in a clean space. It also allows for easy carrying from one area of the classroom to another. Da'Shaylee was proud to show me her cleaning skills at the end of her time with the play-doh.
Play-doh Letter Practice
Kynnedi was able to identify every single one of her play-doh letters, and even told me words that started with each one!
Compare/Contrast
Ms. Ivory's virtual students on Thursday were working on different ways to compare and contrast information from a story. One of the chart options was a Venn Diagram, while the other was this graphic organizer.
Zariyah
Zariyah Rucker proudly turned her work into the Teams chat to show differences and similarities as she read the story. Zariyah chose to handwrite her work, take a photo of it, and post the photo to the Teams chat. This generation will know so much technology by the time they're through elementary school!
Deonte
Deonte Jernigan chose to type his work, and even said, "Ms. Ivory, you should look at mine!" as he turned it in, feeling confident about his observations. It was really encouraging to hear him speak with such confidence about his work!
Highlight on Hybrid
As our semester draws to a close, I had to take a moment to appreciate how far our staff has come in our technological advances. I'm so impressed with the way that our students and staff have taken on the hybrid learning model, with some students in person and some joining the Teams meeting virtually. Pictured here is a teacher meeting that was run in a hybrid session with Ms. Teska and Fales joining in person while Ms. Griffin joined virtually. Thank you to all of our staff and our students and our parents who have adapted to this completely new way of teaching and learning. You are all rockstars!

Ms. Griffin participated in hat day even in the virtual world!

Ms. Smith, Nurse Bennett, and Ms. Jones found their way into some holiday cheer for hat day.
Santa's Helpers
Ms. Webb and Ms. Bryant looked fabulous in their Santa gear, and it was suggested by the students that they should always wear such silly attire.
Ms. Valentine
After Dr. Rogers saw Ms. Valentine several times on hat day WITHOUT a hat, she had to prove that she did indeed bring a hat. This Santa Selfie serves as her evidence.

Our third graders coordinated their outfits on Wednesday to celebrate their friendship for Twin Day!
