WHPE Update July, 2021
"Reach Everyone"
Greetings,
Happy summer everyone! I hope you are enjoying your summer, doing what you traditionally like to do during summer, and maybe trying some new ventures. The past school year ended only a few weeks ago for some. These folks may still be relaxing and kicking back from one of the most challenging school years experienced.
At some point, everyone will start to think about the next school year. These may initially be brief thoughts that get tucked into the back of your mind while walking the dog. Or, maybe while waiting for your child’s sporting event to start, you envision the youngsters on the team as one of your classes.
What challenges do you envision as schools transition to post-COVID teaching? Will your classes still have to follow certain restrictions? What will be the motor skill level of students you teach? Will all instruction be in-person or will online instruction be an option for students?
Let Us Know
We can help. What assistance could you use? Information on a specific topic? An opportunity to meet with other teachers from your level or topic area and just talk and share ideas?
WHPE will be sponsoring professional development sessions in August. Session content has not been decided, yet. Tell us what you need or want and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request. Email your thoughts to me at the address below.
Best wishes. Have a safe and fun Independence Day holiday.
Dan Timm
WHPE President

WHPE Convention
October 27-29 are the dates for this year’s in-person WHPE Convention at the Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Wisconsin Dells. Will you be attending? Have you arranged to have time off from school to attend? Scott Todnem, 2019 SHAPE America National Health Teacher-of-the-Year will be the Keynote Speaker during Thursday’s General Assembly. Karen Fish, 2015 SHAPE America Midwest District Young Professional Physical Education Teacher-of-the-Year will be a Featured Speaker. Additionally, WHPE’s own Shannon Maly, 2021 SHAPE America National High School Physical Education Teacher-of-the-Year and Allisha Blanchette, 2020 Midwest District Health Teacher-of-the-Year, will be presenting. All told, the 2021 convention will feature 10 individuals who have received SHAPE America national and/or district teacher-of-the-year recognition.
In other sessions, Stephanie Morris, Chief Executive Officer, and Brett Fuller, Past President, of SHAPE America will discuss initiatives at the national organization. Closer to home, Penny Kroening, WHPE Executive Director, Brett Fuller, and Tacara Lovings, DPI Health Education and Physical Education Consultant, will present on the new Wisconsin Physical Education Standards.
Come Wednesday night and start the convention off by joining us for the All Convention Social, 8:00-10:00. Stick around for something new on Friday and finish the convention with the TOY Extravaganza!
New Health Division
At its meeting in July, 2020, the Board of Directors approved the creation of a Health Division. Decisions which require a change in the Bylaws, which this decision did, cannot go into effect until the beginning of the next fiscal year. So, as of July 1, WHPE officially has a Health Division. An individual has been asked to serve as the Health Division Vice President and the Board of Directors will vote to approve this person at its meeting on July 21. Having a Health Division will provide more visibility to the many aspects of health education.
SAM Leadership Development Conference
Executive Director Penny Kroening and President Dan Timm attended the virtual Leadership Development Conference sponsored by the Society for Association Management on June 17-18. As COVID-19 had a negative effect on association membership in all states, considerable time was spent discussing ways to increase membership. Additionally, many states are searching for ways to address individuals’ reluctance to renew membership if they do not plan to attend convention. Sharing their knowledge, Penny and Dan led a session discussion on how to conduct a business meeting.
Strategic Plan Update
The Board of Directors began working on a new Strategic Plan in December with identification of strategic goals. Board members have formulated action items that will enable the strategic goals to be met and recommendations on how to achieve the respective action items. Next in the time line will be organizing the various parts of the plan, followed by reviewing the overall Strategic Plan. The new Strategic Plan will guide the direction of WHPE for the next five years.
Summer Professional Development
Keep an eye out for some going-back-to-school professional development in August, mentioned in this SMORE’s introduction. Discussion will take place at the July Board of Directors meeting regarding what this professional development should be. If you have ideas regarding what would be beneficial to you, please email those thoughts to Dan Timm at dtimm@education.wisc.edu
Newsletter Submissions
What do you do, know, or have read that you could share with others in the Fall Newsletter? Fall sounds far away but in order for the Newsletter to come out in September, it needs to go to the printer in August, so has an August 1 deadline for submissions. There is probably something you could share that would benefit others directly and students indirectly. Send submissions to Nicole Popowich at npopowich@uwlax.edu
Although it is summer, Board of Directors members are continuing to post on Facebook. Check Facebook for the latest posts and feel free to “Like.”
