ÉCCHS Composite Sketch
January 2025 Volume 187 Issue 5
Administrative Assertions
We hope that our students, families, and staff enjoy a well-deserved break. A new year presents new opportunities. In January, students will have opportunities to demonstrate learning as they complete their Semester 1 courses. Many courses will have culminating assessments in the form of Diploma Exams, Provincial Achievement Tests, projects, or final exams. Students, continue to focus on your studies to maximize your learning in your courses.
Our Annual Education Results Report 2024/2025 is linked on our website and includes our Education Plan. Please read it over and provide us with your feedback or any questions that you might have about it. We are happy with the improvement in the areas of overall PAT and Diploma Exam results. Here are some highlights that are considered to be particularly noteworthy:
ÉCCHS students participate in more diploma exams than the Province. For instance, 72.1% of ÉCCHS students wrote 3 or more diploma exams whereas the Province saw 64.7% of students write 3 or more diploma exams. Additionally, 60.2% of ÉCCHS students wrote 4 or more diploma exams while the Province saw 52.7% of students write 4 or more diploma exams. This tells us that more ÉCCHS students are writing Math/Science exams than the rest of the province (due to English and Social being required courses) and perhaps speaks to the program and scheduling choices offered to students.
A higher percentage of ÉCCHS students wrote -1 Diploma Exams when compared to the Province. This perhaps speaks to choices in scheduling provided to our students as well as a focus on maximizing learning opportunities. ÉCCHS students appear to be committed to challenging themselves as learners by taking more -1 courses.
ÉCCHS has strong graduation rates, Rutherford Scholarship eligibility, and the school community is highly satisfied with the program of studies that are being offered. This reveals the strength and flexibility in the programs offered to support student success and the quality of teaching at our school.
On November 22, we recognized 283 Grades 9-11 Honours recipients, 96 former and current Awards recipients, and 58 Grade 12 Honours recipients. This reinforces the overall engagement of ÉCCHS students and the hard work of our staff to support student learning. The Grab & Go Thrift Night was hugely successful as many people found apparel treasures. Thank you to Mrs. Kossey and the Fashions class for organizing and leading this fun event!
We wish you a peaceful break. Enjoy the holiday season and Happy New Year!

Dual Credit Programming: What is it?
Dual Credit Programming lets students personalize their high school experience and discover or build upon their career passions and interests. Learning opportunities span many industries and professions such as health care, trades, agriculture and business administration.
Students in High school can earn credits toward: a high school diploma or certificate of achievement, a post-secondary certificate (diploma or degree), and/or a first period apprenticeship or journeyperson certificate.
Dual Credit programming may not be a fit for all students. Post-secondary courses have increased expectations and tighter timelines that students will need to manage alongside their regular high school programming. Many of the courses incorporate on-line programming. Students will be responsible for attending virtual or on-site sessions and meeting post-secondary timelines and expectations. In addition, the completion of post-secondary course/programs through Dual Credit has the possibility of affecting first year post-secondary awards, bursaries, scholarships, athletic standing, and experiencing limited transferability of some post-secondary programs. Students should always consult with their high school counsellor, parents, and the post-secondary institution, as they make decisions about their high school and post-secondary programming.
Email/Communication
Email is the primary means of communication. Students/parents must be checking and using their email. Instructors will be emailing with students frequently throughout the course.
Time Management
Keeping up with the week by week expectations of the course is necessary and essential. Students should set up a Google Calendar or any calendar to organize their work completion. Students need to arrange their week in a way that accomplishes these tasks. Generally, students need to dedicate 5-10 hours weekly to the course and meeting deadlines is critical. These are 3 credit post-secondary courses which means they are 45 hours of instructional time + homework + studying.

ÉCCHS Athletics -January 2025
2024 is ending on a really positive note for our Basketball teams at ÉCCHS. We have hosted two, junior and senior, successful Boston Pizza Classic tournaments. With our junior tournament, both our girls and boys teams cruised through their first two games, eventually making it to their respective finals. Our girls lost a close game to the OLMP senior girls team while our boys beat Ft. Saskatchewan to win their home tournament. With our senior BP Classic, our girls finished 3rd only losing to last year's 6th ranked provincial team, HJ Cody, in the semi final. HJ Cody girls host provincials this year and will be one of the tougher teams in the province again. The senior girls got their redemption though against HJ Cody by beating them in their first league game of the year. Our senior boys team has had a great December. They started their season off with winning the BP Classic tournament. They then went on two play, and win 3 exhibition games including against Bev Facey a 4A school from Sherwood Park. To cap 2024 off they won their first league game of the season in convincing fashion against HJ Cody. Not to be out done by our junior and senior teams, our grade 9 girls and boys teams played their first games of the year at the OLMP home tournament. Both teams played really well over the weekend claiming both championships.
In January our grade 9 teams start up their league games, primarily playing on Mondays. They also host their home BP Classic tournament on January 17th and 18th. Our junior teams both have tournaments, our girls play in the Sedgwick home tournament while our junior boys are in Ft. Saskatchewan. Before the diploma exams start, our senior teams are off to Lloydminster the first weekend back in the New Year.
Our curling team is also well underway. They’ve been practicing Wednesdays after school for their Area, Zone and hopefully Provincial championship tournaments in February. If anyone is still interested in curling you can talk to Mr. Bayliss.
