The Sherman Town & Education Budget Vote:
THIS SATURDAY, May 4th from 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM at Charter Hall (Fire House).
Smarter Balanced (SBAC) and NGSS Assessments
Sherman students in grades 3-8 are participating in the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBAC) and the NGSS Assessments this week to check their understanding of grade level Math, English Language Arts, and Science skills. Students in grades K-8 will also complete their final iReady diagnostics to measure growth throughout the year.
As a reminder, no personal electronic devices can be in their possession during testing. Cell phones, smart watches, fitbits and airpods will be collected by the teachers and βparkedβ during this time.
Standardized assessments are one piece of data that teachers use to ensure that students are successfully achieving grade level benchmarks. In some cases, they may be used as one variable in placing students in classes with prerequisites, such as Algebra or honors classes at the high school level. As a school, the data are used for Sherman to understand whether our curriculum is adequately preparing students to succeed according to state and national level learning standards. Lastly, the State of Connecticut uses the data as one variable on our Sherman School Report Card, in particular when identifying a School of Distinction.
We value you as partners in your childβs education and will share the findings of these assessments with you. You can help support your child by ensuring they have a good nightβs sleep and healthy breakfast during our assessment window.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact Dr. Fildes at 860-355-3793 x315 or via email at fildesk@shermanschool.com.
Reunification Drill
As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain the safety of our students and staff, we are conducting a limited reunification drill this Friday, May 3rd, (Rain date May 10th) for the entire school, including pre-K. We are working in conjunction with town and emergency teams to ensure a successful drill. The drill involves having students, under staff supervision, leave school grounds and transition to the library, which has been designated as our reunification location, and then return back to the school.
Reunification drills are designed to prepare students, staff, and first responders for the process of reuniting students with their families following a crisis or emergency situation. There are a number of reasons for which a reunification may be required, including but not limited to, safety issues associated with the building, weather concerns, and acts of harm. Practicing reunification drills, like the other drills we practice, enable all of us to respond more effectively and efficiently should the need ever arise.
We appreciate your partnership in maintaining safety and security.

Teacher Appreciation - May 8!
We're cooking up some gratitude for our outstanding educators! Teacher Appreciation Week is just around the corner, and on Wednesday, May 8th, we'll be treating them to delicious crepes.
Instead of our usual weekly gestures leading up to the end of the school year, we've opted for one grand celebration this year to truly honor their excellence. Rather than requesting dish donations or your time, we're seeking contributions to help cover the cost of their special treat.
Every donation, no matter the size, is greatly appreciated. You can send in cash or a check made out to Sherman SPTO, or use Venmo at Sherman_PTO.

βοΈ Happening In Our Classrooms...
When we returned from spring break, we celebrated Neurodiversity & Autism all week. Neurodiversity is a fancy word that means peopleβs brains are not all the same, & everyone has their own unique brain. Neurodiversity is talking about autism, ADHD, dyslexia, a& other ways peopleβs brains may be wired differently.
The symbol that celebrates Neurodiversity is a rainbow infinity symbol. The infinity symbol represents inclusion - everyone on the spectrum is included, no matter what their unique form of Autism or Neurodiversity looks like! The rainbow color is also included for this reason, reflecting the diversity of people. Our staff & students replicated this rainbow infinity sign after our Neurodiversity assembly.
Second graders learned how to look closely, like Georgia Oβ Keeffe, to create abstract paintings of flowers!
The Sherman Walk and Talk group enjoyed the fresh air and good company!
Preschoolers are learning about planting and planted their own marigold seeds!
