Message From The Principal
Westbrook Families,
We are very much looking forward to our upcoming Family Math Night on April 10 here at Westbrook. We will once again have food trucks on site located in our bus lane and families can begin ordering from the food trucks starting at 5:00 PM in the rear of our building. The back entrance of the building will be open for families to take food into our multipurpose room starting at 5:00. The actual event that will host a variety of math themed stations will not start until 5:30 PM and will run until 7:00 PM. This is a highly attended event so we anticipate that parking will again be a challenge. Please know that families can park across Greenwood but we should be keeping our fire lanes open around the building.
Please also be aware that on Monday, April 7, the Glenview Police Department will be here at Westbrook doing an "in school" field trip for our preschool students. Part of this field trip will include the preschool students seeing the police car so you will see a squad car parked in our bus lane for the duration of the day on Monday. I am sharing so that if you happen to drive by and see a police car you are aware that there is no emergency happening at Westbrook, just a great opportunity for our preschool students to meet with an officer from the Glenview Police Department.
We are also quickly approaching our bicycle unit in P.E. here at Westbrook. This unit has been put on hold the last few years due to limited space and construction constraints. We are now excited to have this unit back at Westbrook and NEED parent volunteers! Please see the information below if you are willing and able(it does require some physical activity that will require lower back strength) to help as this is a truly unique and memorable unit for our students. THANK YOU!
Have a great weekend!
Patrick
Class Placement Feedback
Later this spring, the Westbrook staff and I will engage in our work to create the groups of children that will comprise our 2025-26 homeroom classes. The class placement process is one that takes considerable time and collaboration among our school team, and will not be truly finalized until August.
In creating classes, we strive to take into account all that we have already learned regarding the social, emotional, academic and creative aspects of every child. Our goal is to form balanced, heterogeneous classes in which each child can succeed. If you have additional information that you feel is important for us to consider when placing your child in a class for next school year, please share it with me in writing (or email: phoeft@glenview34.org) no later than Monday, April 21st. If your child will not be returning to Westbrook for the 2025-2026 school year because your family is moving or he/she will be enrolling in a private school, please let the front office know as soon as possible via email to mzenzola@glenview34.org and dcrask@glenview34.org.
Your thoughts about your child’s peer relationships and previous school experiences are certainly valued. Consistent with past practice at Westbrook School, however, please know that we are unable to honor requests for specific teachers or specific friend requests. If you have any questions about the class placement process, please feel free to reach out!
Student Bingo
On Monday, students can start to fill their #BeWell34 Bingo board. The squares are filled with great ideas that staff and students shared with us. You’ll notice that it’s an inclusive Bingo board with activities that will allow all of our students to have an opportunity to get Bingo (or even the coveted “coverall” with all squares filled)!
Our K-2 students will receive a hard copy on Monday.
Bike Unit in Physical Education & Volunteers Are Needed
The Westbrook BIKE unit starts April 15th!
Westbrook School is preparing to host a bicycle unit starting Tuesday April 15th! There will be information coming home through your classroom teacher newsletters about this amazing unit (made possible through a GEF grant) and volunteer opportunities!
Students should bring their helmets into school starting Tuesday, April 15th. There will be a limited amount of helmets available to borrow. We look forward to building upon their balance skills, starting and stopping the bike and riding independently. Be looking for a paper copy coming home with your student! If you would like to volunteer during our outdoor biking days please feel free to sign up here BIKE VOLUNTEER SIGN UP.

2nd Grade CogAT Testing Letter
Dear Families,
Between April 14th and April 25th your second grade child will take the Cognitive Abilities Test™ (CogAT®). The purpose of this letter is to inform you about the test so that, with your support and encouragement, your child will do his/her best on the CogAT test.
CogAT measures students’ learned reasoning abilities in the three areas most closely related to success in school:
The Verbal Battery measures students’ abilities to reason with verbal symbols and concepts. These reasoning abilities play an important role in reading comprehension, critical thinking, writing, and virtually all verbal learning tasks.
The Quantitative Battery measures students’ abilities to reason with quantitative symbols and concepts. These reasoning skills are significantly related to problem solving in mathematics and other disciplines.
The Nonverbal Battery measures students’ abilities to reason with geometric shapes and figures. To perform successfully, students must accurately implement strategies for solving novel problems.
The three separate batteries provide a broad perspective on each student’s learned reasoning abilities, identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses.
Each of the CogAT batteries will have three unique subtests which students will be tested on. Each subtest takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete and includes practice questions to help students become familiar with the content and the format of the subtests.
How your child can prepare for test taking—and what you can do to help
You can help your child do his or her best by considering these tips:
Make sure that your child is in school and on time on test days. Reschedule appointments and other out-of-school time on non-testing days.
Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast before each day of testing.
Score reporting and how we use test results
An email will be sent to you in May with your child’s results. These scores will indicate how your child performed on the CogAT test compared with other students across the nation who are in the same grade and locally. Your child’s CogAT score is one measure that is used for identification for both the ELA Gifted Program and the Advanced Math Program.
Thank you for encouraging and supporting your student during testing. If you have any questions, please contact your building principal or the Teacher on Assignment for Assessments, Molly Merkey, at 847-657-2473 or mmerkey@glenview34.org.
Sincerely,
Dr. Matthew Silverman
Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning
