Principal's Perspective from Mr. Lang
October 2024
Hi Lincoln Families,
We have had a successful October thus far, with many events and exciting times here at Lincoln. Field trips, PLENTY of warm and sunshiny days. Homecoming was a successful time with our 1st grade Teddy Bear parade, a great parade downtown and a Husky Football Win! Thank you for taking the time to come in and celebrate the week with us.
Fundraiser Update
We also had a successful end to our annual Fundraiser. Our PTO was very happy with the results of the fundraiser, sharing a healthy balance of both cash donations and Club's Choice. If you ordered from Club’s Choice, the PTO has scheduled the pick up for October 23rd from 4pm-6pm here at Lincoln in the old gym.
MEA Break and Oct 21st Professional Development
On Thursday and Friday of this week, the state teachers union hosts its annual Educator Conference for all state teachers. MEA is a long standing conference offering professional development for teachers. There will be no school for students on Thursday 10/17 or Friday 10/18 and the Lincoln office will be closed.
The following Monday, October 21st, is a teacher work day. Students will not have school this day either (10/21). As a district, teachers are engaging in learning work around the READ Act, some recently passed legislation designed to improve our overall instructional practices in reading. Other educator groups are also engaging in professional development opportunities to continually improve their effectiveness in the classroom.
Cooler Weather & Lost and Found
We are gearing up for the cool weather Fall has brought us, as it’s starting to settle in. This is a great time to dig through your storage to find your hats, gloves and other winter gear you will plan on needing as we continue to dip into the cooler temperatures. I encourage you to label your clothing in some way so if it is left in our lost and found, we can look for a name or your student can look through and find their name. Speaking of lost and found, we already have quite a collection of clothing. If you are dropping off or if you are here picking up, please ask to look through lost and found if you feel you are missing something. You can encourage your child to look through it as well to see if they recognize anything. At the end of the month, we will be donating any leftover clothing locally.
Halloween Celebrations
As a district, we want to communicate with families that for a variety of reasons, we will not be holding Halloween parties at school and we would encourage you not to send students to school dressed up in Halloween costumes. As a building and within classrooms, we will not be holding formal Halloween parties. Across the district or in some grades, there may be a Fall Harvest party or some recognition and celebration of fall. These are often tied to academic learning and not the holiday so feel free to engage in these if happening in your student’s classroom.
CHAMPS
We will be offering our after school program again this year for students who meet the criteria. Classroom teachers will be communicating with families of students who meet the entrance requirements and are able to attend. Similarly to our summer learning program, this program works on a referral basis so students must meet the criteria set forth by the district in order to attend. More information will be shared in the coming weeks; we wanted to let families know we will be running it again this year.

Red Ribbon Week October 21st-October 27, 2024
Please join our schools and community as we celebrate Red Ribbon Week during the month of October. This is an annual national drug prevention celebration. The D.E.A. estimates that over 90 million people, nationwide, celebrate this event. Adults can support our youth to make a pledge to live a drug free life. OHS SHOC (Students Helping Others Choose) is active during the week spreading awareness and education of the dangers of drug use. A variety of activities are hosted for our youth. Our High School will have Red decorations adorning the hallways and cafeteria, Pledge banners and OMS/OHS/ALC prevention lunchbooths. There will be a 4th grade drug prevention poster contest. These posters will be displayed in local storefronts as well as in the schools.
Families are encouraged to attend our RRW Kickoff Event at the Owatonna High School in the cafeteria. Owatonna’s Mayor Kuntz will be there to read the Red Ribbon Week Proclamation. In addition, there will be free snacks, lots of activities and we will honor our 4th grade “Life is a Movie Film Drug Free” poster contest winners. SHOC students will be leading activities and handing out Halloween treats and prizes to kids. The Steele County Healthy Youth Board and Public Health will be sharing literature with parents about how to help keep their kids healthy and drug/vape free.
Support our youth and encourage each of them to make a pledge to live a healthy, drug free lifestyle. I hope to see everyone at the Owatonna High School on Tuesday, Oct. 22nd from 5:00-6:30 at our Red Ribbon Week kick off event!
