Dakota HS – Upcoming Events & New Chapter
by Jim Keal, Assistant Principal
Spring has sprung! The April showers have arrived, and things are turning green. At Dakota High School it means the end of the school year is rapidly approaching. Students working to finish classes and many looking forward to graduation; one of the best days of the year. A few highlights for year-end:
· All Agassiz Variety Show is on April 30th.
· State assessments for all sophomores and freshmen beginning late April into May.
· Several college and career visits – open to all students.
· Many weekly activities that are open to all students. Ask any staff.
· Dakota graduation is May 31st at 7pm. Everyone is invited to celebrate with our graduates. Graduates should be on the lookout for graduation celebration information.
Dakota High School is unique for a lot of reasons. Among my favorite is that any former student (as well as current students) is welcome to collaborate with us for help with life; whether it is looking for a job, some items from our food pantry, life advice, or even help with taxes; the staff step up to help. Just ask!
It is with a bit of melancholy that I contemplate the end of my school year. This is my last year at Dakota because I have been assigned a different leadership role within Fargo Public Schools. These past seven years with the students and staff of Dakota High School are the highlight of my 2-decade long career and I will miss it. Special thanks to Principal Burkman and everyone at Dakota for making every day amazing!

Parents are encouraged to be positive and supportive in their relationships with advisors and coaches. It is the prerogative of the advisor/coach to manage the activity in such a manner that sound human relationships are encouraged and the regulations of the North Dakota High School Activities Association are met. A team effort by parents, school officials, and the participants is needed.

WOODROW WILSON & DAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL BIOS PROJECT
By David Burkman, DKHS Principal
The title of the Bios project plays with two distinctly different takes on the term “bios”. In the tech world, BIOS is the program a computer’s processor uses to start the computer and it also manages flow between the computers operating system and attached devices - basic input output system (BIOS). In general terminology, bio is short for biography which is an account of someone’s life/story; bios are the plural for bio – multiple individuals’ life stories… who have been part of writing the Woodrow Wilson and/or Dakota High School story.
In short, WWHS/DKHS Bios project reflects upon the journey of the collective team throughout the years of operation. It celebrates individuals and their inputs and outputs that have enriched the journey. Sometimes the inputs are basic and sometimes they are extraordinary! It celebrates the climate, culture and community of a living system composed of numerous, unique individuals who work together for positive outcomes and goodness. Each individual is important and has a lot to contribute.
The work on the Bios Project was launched in March of 2020. The original team included Sheri Ernst, Jim Keal, Jennie Rude, Annie Retka, Ila Hegg, David Burkman and Sherry Grover. The team met monthly for two years. Josh Schreier replaced Annie in year 2. Kudos and deep appreciation to Sherry Grover has been the engine that powered the project through to completion. She has contributed hundreds of hours of work on the bios project that will continue to tell the story about a team of caring adults and their excellent work with some of the greatest kids (young adults).

The library has many resources for students to help with their studies such as book displays to promote important upcoming events like “Black History” month of February, choosing what to study and how to pay for college after high school. The library also has puzzle building as a brain break.
