SVIE 19th Annual Traditional Pow Wow - May 27
Snohomish, Monroe and Sultan school districts’ Skykomish Valley Indian Education (SVIE) program is holding the 19th Annual Traditional Pow Wow. The event will be held on Saturday, May 27, at Monroe High School Commons (17001 Tester Road in Monroe) from noon to 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome, and there is no admission charge.
There will be a Plains-style Pow Wow Grand Entry at 1 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. A free dinner will be served from 5-6 p.m. with pow wow soup, fry bread by Ernie and Melissa Benson, and snacks available during the rest of the evening. Cultural arts vendors, information tables for health and education, and a raffle will be part of the event. The closing ceremony will take place at 9 p.m.
Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Skykomish Valley Indian Education Parent Organization Merit Award Fund and provide funding for future cultural events.
SVIE is a grant-funded program serving Native American/Alaska Native students, preschool through high school, in the Monroe, Snohomish, and Sultan school districts. Night of the Arts
The Snohomish community has a great opportunity to enjoy a variety of artwork - and more! Snohomish High School will host its Night of the Arts event on Thursday, May 25, from 5-8 p.m. This annual event is geared to raise community awareness, understanding, and enthusiasm toward art. Artwork from area students will be on display, and a variety of mediums will be represented. Suggested admission is $5 for adults. Students and children are free.

Glacier Peak High School student excels on state vet knowledge exam
Congrats to Glacier Peak High School freshman Mara Lautzenhiser (at left in photo) who scored an amazing 92% on the veterinary knowledge exam at the recent Washington Future Farmers of America (FFA) State Convention in Kennewick.
In an event wrap-up email sent to participants from across the state, Dr. Megan Cihak, WAFFA Vet Science Coordinator, noted “Mara from Glacier Peak scored an incredible 92% on the knowledge exam - to my knowledge one of the highest scores on this exam since I started writing it!”
Students recognized at state photography competition
We have some amazing student photographers among us! Congrats to our Glacier Peak High School (GPHS) and Snohomish High School (SHS) students who placed in this year's Washington State High School Photography Competition! In addition, Snohomish High School received 6th place in state as a photography team!

TONIGHT - Bilingual Washington Opportunity Career & Technical Scholarship Workshop
Join us at a Bilingual Washington Opportunity Career & Technical Scholarship Workshop to be held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, at the district’s Resource and Service Center (1601 Avenue D in Snohomish).

- 6:30 p.m. - Presentation on the scholarship and career and technical programs
- 7-8 p.m. – Washington Opportunity Scholarship application workshop
Did you know? Low-income and middle-income students interested in applying for vocational and technical careers can receive a full-tuition scholarship from the Washington Opportunity Career & Technical Scholarship to cover the cost of technical diploma and certificate programs. Join us at this special workshop where 12th grade students and families can receive help in finding out about more vocational and technical careers, eligible programs of study, and how to apply the scholarship. Even if you’re not in the 12th grade, feel free to join us to plan for the future! The workshop is designed especially for migrant and bilingual 12th grade students and families to receive additional help in Spanish, but all languages and grades are welcome to attend. Join us this summer at Kids' Café!
All area children aged 18 and younger are invited to join the Snohomish School District at its Kids' Café summer breakfast and lunch program. The program is free, and there is no pre-registration or sign-up. Any area child is encouraged to participate and enjoy a healthy breakfast and/or lunch.
Kids' Café will be held Mondays through Fridays and runs from Monday, June 26, through Friday, September 1. (There is no service on Tuesday, July 4.) Meals will be offered at the following times and locations:
- Valley View Middle School (14308 Broadway Avenue SE in Snohomish)
- Breakfast - 8:30-9 a.m.
- Lunch - 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
- Three Rivers Mobile Home Park (13201 Elliott Road in Snohomish)

- Snohomish Library (311 Maple Avenue in Snohomish)
- Breakfast - 8:30-9 a.m.

About the program:
- Children will need to consume all meals on site. Children cannot take food away from the service site.
- Children must be present to get a meal. Children will not be permitted to take food for siblings at home.
- Children may only receive a single breakfast and lunch per child, per day.
- Parent/guardian pick up of meals is not allowed.
- Mealtimes (breakfast and lunch) are stand alone, and meals can only be served at the predetermined times. Breakfast and lunch cannot be served together.
- The Snohomish School District’s food service provider is Chartwells Food Service/Compass Group.

Got books? Book Café seeks donations
Interested in donating books to the Snohomish Book Café? During the school year, all Snohomish School District school offices and libraries in the Snohomish School District are happy to take your book donations and send them to the Book Café. (Please only drop off books inside during school office hours. Do not leave boxes of books outside of the school office.) Donations can also be dropped at the district office (1601 Avenue D in Snohomish).
What is needed:
- New and gently used chapter books (for grades K-8)
- New and gently used story books (for grades K-8)
- New and gently used board books (for grades K-8)
- New and gently used kids magazines (for grades K-8)
New children’s books on the “Book Café Amazon Wish List” can also be purchased directly from Amazon at www.sno.wednet.edu/bookcafewishlist.
Please note that high-school age and adult books, magazines, reference books, etc. are not needed and cannot be accepted at this time.
Food service account balances
Any balances remaining your child’s food service account from the previous school year will move forward to the new school year. If your child is graduating, funds are automatically transferred to a younger sibling's account. If your child is graduating and there are no younger siblings, or if your child is no longer a district student, a refund of any remaining account balance can be requested by contacting Food Service at kim.horton@sno.wednet.edu or 360-563-7357. Please include your child's name, school, student ID number and address.

Summer youth swim team
The Snohomish Aquatic Center Piranhas are a part of this year's Craze Summer Swim League. Being a part of this league provides athletes with the opportunity to compete in four short, fun swim meets (meet participation is not required). The team will practice Mondays through Fridays from 9-10 a.m. and from 10-11 a.m. Head Coach Grace Barr has put together a great coaching staff, who are very excited about the season!
