North Putnam senior, Nolan Hackleman was named a Regional All-Star by the Indiana Association of School Principals at a banquet last week in Indianapolis. Nolan is the son of Neal and Kami Hackleman of Roachdale. In attendance to celebrate Nolan’s prestigious recognition were his parents; his sister, Kassidy; and members of the high school faculty, Mr. Chew, Mrs. Weaver, and Mr. Morgan. Mr. Morgan was selected by Nolan as his most influential educator.

NP FFA Small Engines Teams Compete
On Saturday, April 27th North Putnam FFA members Isaac Pickle and Tillmon Black placed 5th out of 31 teams in the FFA Small Engines competition. Also competing and doing well were Caiden Hankins and Zach Coffman.
Students are allotted 75 minutes to assemble a gas engine and successfully start it within the designated time frame. Additionally, students engaged in a comprehensive small engines knowledge assessment as well as a parts and tools assessment to demonstrate their proficiency. This event encompasses skill-testing activities at four distinct stations to evaluate students' expertise and practical application in the realm of small engine mechanics.
Thank you Mr. Davis for helping our students in this competition, and if you would like to learn more about this or other FFA competitions please see one of our FFA Advisors.
NP Disc Golf
Did you know that North Putnam has a public Disc Golf course on the property? This was the brainchild of Mr. Brooks and Mr. Lawrence. The Disc Golf course officially opened in the Fall of 2023. It took a considerable amount of work by Brooks and Lawrence and a team of volunteers to clear and make the course a reality. We would like to thank all those that made this a possibility.
If you want to learn more about the sport of Disc Golf, reach out to Mr. Brooks or Mr. Lawrence, they would love to see the course used more, and are eager to help grow the sport of Disc Golf.
The course is open every day, but closed during school hours.
Recently a group of volunteers met on Sunday, April 21st to clear more and prepare the course for the 2024 season.
ICC - Competency #2 - Written Communication
The Indiana College Core (ICC) is a block of 30 credit hours of college-level coursework in six competency areas. The Indiana College Core allows HS students to enter college as a sophomore, allowing students to have more options when they arrive on campus, whether that's a 2 year or 4 year program. The six competency areas that students must receive a minimum of 3 credit hours (1 course) in are:
- Speaking and Listening
- Written Communication
- Quantitative Reasoning
- Scientific Ways of Knowing
- Social and Behavioral Ways of Knowing
- Humanistic Ways of Knowing
In this issue we will look at the second competency, Written Communication. In order for students to complete this competency they must earn at least 3 credit hours, or one high school course in this competency. At NPHS we have two courses that students can take (6 credit hours) that will add to the 30 hours toward the Indiana College Core. The first course is ENGL 111, English Composition. This course is similar to the commonly known IU course W131. ENGL 111 is a prerequisite for almost all English courses students will take while in college and transfers very easily to all Indiana public colleges and universities. The second course students can take to earn credits toward the Indiana College Core is ENGL 215, Rhetoric and Argument. Both of these courses are offered at North Putnam High School, taught by N.P.H.S. faculty. Both courses are available for juniors and seniors to take, and are at no cost to students. We encourage students considering a 2 or 4 year college program to enroll in ENGL 111 and ENG 215 as juniors, which will open up the opportunity to take two additional dual credit English courses when they are a senior.
Stay tuned when next issue we discuss the different ways NPHS students can meet the Quantitative Reasoning competency.

Opioid Settlement Funding Available in Putnam County
In 2021, Opioid manufacturers, distributors, and retailers agreed to pay more than $54 billion to settle their role in the opioid epidemic. Over the next two decades, Indiana is set to receive $507 million of that settlement money with Putnam County's part exceeding $1.1 million.
The Putnam County Commissioners appointed the Local JRAC Council to discuss, review and make recommendations regarding submitted proposals on how to best use our county's allocated funding from the Opioid Settlement. The goal of this funding is to be used for, but not limited to, treatment, recovery, harm reduction, prevention, and education efforts.
Two funding cycles will occur annually - proposals are due the first Wednesday of February and first Wednesday of August. Applications must go through a review process. Opioid funding is limited, and some applications may not be approved. Only proposals directly related to addressing the opioid epidemic will be considered for funding.
More information about this opportunity can be found on the JRAC website or by emailing: opioidsettlement@co.putnam.in.us
