Satisfying our Thirst
“Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk,
so that by it you may grow into salvation” (1 Peter 2:2).
Throughout Scripture, we read of the nurturing images of God. God gently, lovingly embraces all who turn to him.
In Deuteronomy 32:11, God’s love for us is described in an analogy to a mother eagle. The ancient Hebrew people were taught to follow the commandments of the Lord, just as a mother eagle takes its young aloft teaching them the joy of flight. While learning the fly, the young eaglet is secure in the presence of a parent, as we are secure in the love of God.
Jesus himself spoke in parental terms toward the city of David saying, “How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings…” (Matthew 23:37).
Jesus could not gather those who did not wish to follow, to learn, to obey.
Like an eagle, like a hen, God seeks to gather us, challenge us, teach us, while pushing us into the world to use our spiritual wings. And when we fall, God is there to rescue us, comfort us, and encourage us again to take flight.
Better than the best parental example you have ever known is the love and nurture God provides. Stand secure in the mercy God extends to you and all whom you love.
