BOOKS FOR BOHOL
Wright Elementary - Books for Bohol Book Drive
October 6th - October 20th
Bohol is an island province of the Philippines; the majority of the island natives live in poverty. Most of the adults in Bohol can read only at a 3rd grade level or lower. Recently, education has become more of a priority in the Philippines. Sadly, during Typhoon Odette they suffered devastating losses, with books being one of those. Less than 1/3 of all children in Bohol have ever owned a book. Access to books is very limited for this island.
A former Wright Elementary parent: Carl Crowell now lives in Bohol and has started this project to help get books in the hands of Bohol children. So far, they have distributed over 2,400 books! Books are boxed and shipped by Carl and his family at no cost to us.
From October 6th until October 20th, Wright Elementary will be collecting gently used books to send to the island. The requirements for books to be donated are as follows:
1) Gently Used books ONLY (no new books or money will be accepted) – because of the high humidity and weather conditions books get moldy and are unusable in 2 years.
2) Book levels should be: Early readers, picture books, or 2nd or 3rd grade chapter books. Anything above these will be too hard for the children and most of their adults to read. They will accept books up to a 6th grade level, but the need is for the younger levels.
3) Books should be clean, with no ripped pages, SOME coloring or writing in a book is okay.
Please be mindful when sending books with your student, make sure the books are in a condition that will help the children and families of Bohol enjoy reading together.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- Student school hours are 7:50am-2:20pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
- Every Wednesday during the school year will be a one hour late start. School hours on Wednesdays are 8:50am-2:20pm.
- Doors open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 7:30am for students to access breakfast and 7:40am to begin entering their classrooms. Wednesdays are one hour later.
- Please do not park in the bike lane, block intersections, OR neighboring households driveways when picking up or dropping off your student. This is illegal and creates an unsafe environment for children and families.
- Please do not drop your student's off in the bus lane or at the parking lot entrance in front of the school. This is a safety precaution and will be strictly enforced. Also, please make sure your student has safely exited your vehicle and is on the sidewalk before starting to drive away.
- If your student will be absent for any reason, please call our Absence Reporting Line at (503) 399-5503 24 hours a day/7 days a week and leave a detailed message that includes student name, ID number, diagnosis, symptoms and date symptoms started.
Salem-Keizer Public Schools often take photos or video of school activities or events in which students are featured. These photos or videotapes are frequently used as promotional items for the school district. If you do not want your child photographed or videotaped while at school, please send a written notice to our school office as soon as possible. If there is no written notice on file, the school will assume it has the right to photograph or videotape your child AND post to social media.
NO COST SCHOOL MEALS AND MENU
For the 2023-24, all Salem-Keizer schools qualify for no-cost meals under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). This program allows SKPS to provide all students enrolled at Salem-Keizer Public Schools a healthy breakfast and lunch at school at no charge to your household each day. You will not be required to complete any free/reduced-price meal paperwork for your students.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
In Salem-Keizer Schools, we encourage our families and community members to be actively engaged in our students’ learning. Volunteers are needed all year long and provide important support for our schools. If you would like to volunteer there are many opportunities, including chaperoning off-site incentive trips, classroom help, mailings, bulletin boards, library shelving, working at the book fairs, and many other areas. As of June 17, 2023, volunteers are no longer required by state law to submit proof of the COVID-19 vaccination in order to volunteer in Salem-Keizer Public Schools.
