HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
September 15th -October 15th
Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration of Hispanic and Latino history and culture. While we celebrate Hispanic and Latino communities beyond this month, from September 15 to October 15 we give extra recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States, including important advocacy work, vibrant art, popular and traditional foods, and much more. Hispanic Heritage Month provides an additional opportunity to explore the incredible impact Latinas and Latinos have had on the United States for generations.
Today, the Latino population in the United States is over 60 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This makes up 18.9% of the total population and is the largest racial or ethnic group. Latinos continue to help fuel our economy and enrich our nation as entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, entertainers, scientists, public servants, and much more. This month we celebrate our Hispanic/Latino families and their contribution to our Meigs community.
ATTENTION 7TH GRADE FAMILIES!

WeGo Try the Ride Event
Experience your student's bus route firsthand during the WeGo Try The Ride Event on Thursday, September 19th at 2:45 PM. Meet your student at dismissal at Meigs Academic Magnet School (713 Ramsey St) and ride along with them on their route to see what it's all about!
Important Details:
- Transportation: We encourage you to ride home on the bus with your child. You'll need to coordinate your own transportation to Meigs for the event.
- Parking: If you need to leave a car, please DO NOT park in the bus lane in front of the school. Park in the street or find available parking at Frederick Douglass Park.
This free event will have WeGo representatives available to answer any questions about bus schedules and routes. It's also a great opportunity to connect with other students who use the bus.
We hope to see you there!

Counseling Corner:
Organized? Check!
It sounds simple, but it’s true— organized students do better in school. Share this daily checklist to help your tween stay on top of his schoolwork.
During school:
I hand in all my homework at the beginning of each class.
I write new assignments, projects, and tests in my planner.
I put homework assignments in my backpack, along with any textbooks, notes, and supplies I will need.
After school:
I clean out my backpack. I throw away or file anything I don’t need for school tomorrow.
I ask my parents to sign any notes or forms. I tell them if I need their help with something like getting to the library or ordering a band uniform.
I cross off each homework assignment in my planner as I finish it, and put it directly into my backpack.

When our kids or teens mess up – which they will, because they’re humans, not robots – the way we respond can open them up to our influence or shut them down to it. It can expand the fight and the disconnection, or it can shrink it. In time they will learn to be more in control of their urge for fight or flight, but for now, we will need to lead the way. Of course, we are also human, and sometimes despite our biggest efforts to stay calm, we will step into the ring rather than wait for them to step out. We’re human. It’s going to happen. And that’s okay.
For additional information, please visit our SEL at Meigs website (https://selatmeigs.weebly.com/sel-for-parents.html).
IMPORTANCE OF NOT SHARING THREATS ONLINE
We ask families to remind students not to share or circulate any threatening messages they see online, even if they believe the threat to be a prank. Sharing these posts only increases fear and confusion. Instead, please report any concerning messages directly to the school district or law enforcement so that they can be handled responsibly. This ensures that false information does not spread, and the appropriate actions can be taken.
