Kia Ora Chelsea Whānau,
Mānawatia a Matariki!
On Wednesday the 26th of June we are celebrating Matariki here at school and we would love for you to join us. In preparation for this, I thought I would share with you some information about what Matariki is so that you too can grow your knowledge. The cluster of Matariki consists of nine stars, although some iwi (tribes) recognise only seven. Different iwi across the country have various stories (pūrākau) and names for these stars. Some refer to the cluster as Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea (The Eyes of the God Tāwhirimātea). This name comes from the story of Tāwhirimātea, who, in a fit of rage over the separation of his parents Papatūānuku and Ranginui, tore out his eyes and threw them into the sky, where they landed on his father's chest. Many Māori view Matariki as the central star, the mother surrounded by her children. The names, genders, and roles of these stars vary among different iwi. You don’t have to be Māori to celebrate Matariki, there will be lots of amazing celebrations around Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) - get involved!
Chelsea Champions!
Chelsea Basketball teams have been doing a phenomenal job of representing our school. It has been reported that the Chelsea Raptors and the Chelsea Wildcats have both taken out 3rd place for their competitions. Ka rawe!
Community Consultation
Today you will be receiving via HERO some information around some changes we would like to make to our transition to school policy - your voice is really important to us so please take the time to fill out the corresponding survey.
HERO Reporting
Exciting news! We will be making live our Mid-Year Learning Data to parents via HERO in Week 3 of Term 3. We are currently busy in the background making a few important changes to align with the changes in curriculum - You will receive more information about this and how to read this information next term. As always, we are looking forward to sharing this information with you so that we can all work together as a team to best support your child to success.
Farewell Mrs Pine!
Sadly, at the end of this term we are saying ‘see ya later’ to Mrs Pine who is stepping away from her classroom role in Pakiaka Hub 1. Don’t worry though, you might just see her back here relieving some time soon! Thank you so much Mrs Pine for all of your mahi, we will really miss having you around.
Have a wonderful weekend, I am looking forward to seeing those of you heading along to Trivia night - I hear the costumes are outstanding! Just a reminder that on the last day of term we do finish school at 2pm so mark it in your calendars.
Ngā mihi nui,
Chrissy Wakeman

Te Reo
Mānawatia a Matariki! We are looking forward to our Matariki Soup Evening next week- fingers crossed for fine weather! The theme for Matariki 2024 is Matariki Heri Kai - The feast of Matariki. Matariki Heri Kai comes from the Māori proverb, Matariki whetū heri kai, meaning Matariki, the bringer of food. How fitting that we are meeting to feast! We will start at 5pm with a karakia kai, soup will be available from 5-6pm on the top courts. At the same time, there will be activities in the hall if you'd like to take part in these. At 6pm, we will move down to the courts outside the hall for the kapa haka performances. Following the Junior Kapa Haka, one of our parents is going to speak. As a school, we will be singing Matariki- E Ara E in support- you're welcome to join in if you'd like!
Structured Literacy Update
This term as part of our Structured Literacy Professional Learning with Liz Kane Literacy we have been focusing on the Review part of our Literacy lessons. We have, together with our consultant, been looking at the importance of regularly reviewing the sounds we have previously taught and how to do this quickly and effectively. Reviewing previously taught sounds, whether in Reading or Spelling, ensures that these sounds are consolidated and embedded in long-term memory. This means that automaticity should follow.
Team Updates
Kākano
We are racing towards the end of another busy term! We are looking forward to having Andy from Tools4Teachers in this week to give our teachers some more ideas for our ESOL students. Our Kapa Haka students are busy practicing for their Matariki performance next week too!
We're noticing a lot of high energy, sugary foods creeping into lunch boxes at the moment- this doesn't help our learners sustain themselves throughout the day. Sometimes getting children to help with lunchbox prep means they eat more! High protein snacks, fruit and veggies are ideal- we totally understand that food is expensive! Here are some ideas for lunchbox ideas.
Pakiaka
Wow! What a busy term it has been. It is hard to believe we are in week 8 already!
Our students have been enjoying rotating around the Pakiaka teachers for Physical Education. They have been learning large ball skills like catching, passing, kicking, and dribbling for sports such as netball, basketball, rugby, and soccer. It’s wonderful to see the kids so engaged and active in developing their sports skills.
Last Friday, Pakiaka Hub 1 hosted an assembly where they showcased their learning about space. The students shared their poetry, fact writing, and amazing space-themed art. They did a stellar job showcasing their learning and creativity! Thank you to everyone who came along to support them.
Next week, we are looking forward to Matariki week and have planned some exciting in-class activities for our tamariki. We are especially excited about the Matariki Soup Evening which starts at 5pm next Wednesday and are looking forward to seeing our Junior Kapa Haka group perform on the night at 6 pm. We look forward to seeing you all there.
Your child has brought home a poem they selected for our Poetry Recital in Week 2 of Term 3. Please encourage them to practice regularly to feel confident and prepared. We will be looking for expressive reading, a clear voice and if they wish, the effective use of hand gestures to emphasise their poem.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in making this term a success. We love it when you read the learning stories with your children and leave a comment. It’s a great way to celebrate their achievements and encourage their ongoing learning journey.
We look forward to seeing you at the Matariki Soup Evening and throughout the final weeks of the term.
Rito
We have had a busy last few weeks and have had many exciting opportunities to show our Chelsea DNA and Values.
We had a visit from Auckland Transport for our Scooter Day. The focus was on safety - Helmets are a must but so is being aware of how to approach a crossing and a driveway. The tips around ensuring we are safe when out on our scooters will make our learners responsible “road users” and keep them safe.
Our Chelsea Cross-Country on Thursday, 6 June, proved to be a great demonstration of how training and being up for a challenge can make for an enjoyable morning out. We were so proud of all those who participated and wish the Year 4s who qualified for Interschools the best of luck tomorrow.
Our Pajama Day was a just reward for the amazing donations we brought in for the “Give a Kid a Blanket” initiative and with all the rainy weather we enjoyed a Movie Afternoon in our hubs to end the day off!
As the term is wrapping up we are nearing the end of our Term 2 Rotations which have seen the syndicate moving through 2 week rotations around PE, Dance, Environment, Science and Te Reo. It has been wonderful to see the excitement and engagement as we have explored these aspects of our curriculum.
For DOT Times we are looking for avid sewing volunteers (basic skills are perfect!) who could give up an hour or so on either a Monday or Friday afternoon … we have sewing machines and keen sewers looking for help with some projects. If this is you, please chat with one of the Rito teachers. We are also hunting for puzzles, so if you have any (with all their pieces) no longer needed please send them our way.
Lots of exciting events still to come this term … Kapa Haka Festival, Matariki Soup Evening, Interschools Cross-country, and Sports Prize giving! This makes for a busy end to the term.
Māhuri
Week 8 Already! We have a busy few weeks ahead! This week began with a bang, featuring our Cycle Skills Day and the Chess Club competition. Well done to all participants—your hard work and practice truly paid off. Looking ahead, we have several exciting events, including Positive Puberty Day on Wednesday, and our Kapa Haka group's performances at the Birkdale Beach Haven Matariki Festival on Friday and the Matariki Soup Night performance next Wednesday.
