Can I change my insurance elections mid-year?
Per IRS regulations insurance changes are only allowed mid-year for qualifying events such as a job change, marriage, death, divorce, gain/loss of other insurance coverage, and the birth of a baby or adoption. Outside of these events all other changes must wait until open enrollment which happens during the month of May for a July 1 effective date.
Staff have 30 days from the event to adjust coverage with the District. Babies and adoption are granted 60 days.
In order to process an insurance change the staff member must complete the following:
- Notify HR
- Staff will need to complete a new insurance enrollment/change form
- Provide proof of the event by requesting documentation from the insurance carrier or other employer itemizing out enrolled plan type, policy start/end date, and dependents enrolled.
Do you have an upcoming surgery or maternity leave? Make sure to contact HR!
What is FMLA?
The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires covered employers to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to eligible employees for the following reasons:

- to care for the employee’s spouse, son, daughter or parent, who has a serious health condition;

Qualification Benchmarks:
- You have worked for your employer at least 12 months
- AND
- You have at least 1,250 hours of service for your employer during the 12 months before your leave
Pay for FMLA time is outlined in either your master contract and/or employee handbook which determines:
- Leave for Care of Self must be supplemented by your remaining sick, personal leave, and deduct
